I felt so powerfully for Frodo when I read Lord of the Rings. It was a profound and moving experience that left me shaken for days, but it was not the empathy I would feel meeting a real person who had been through those or similar events.
I'm 100% with you when you say we won't get out of this by feeling *less*, but our feelings need to be in support of each other, not rocks. Encouraging people to feel empathy with LLM's is as effective for that as trying to grow your family by watching porn alone.
