The 1980s sanctuary and solidarity movements with Central American refugees from the US-backed Dirty Wars was actually pretty powerful.
*were. Sigh.
Do either of you know a book about that, by chance? Or another good resource? Maybe a history podcast? It's been coming up a lot lately but I don't know much about it.
TYSM, Dr. Taber! Looking forward to voting for you again.
Thank you!
Thank you. This helps.
Least not forget the Italians. Presidential Proclamation 2527 targeted the Italians and lead to deportations, being sent to concentration camps or registering as enemy aliens and forced to move to certain areas.
We also did German-Americans during WWI. A lot of peoples' ancestors got post-hoc "dutched," including some of mine. Country just looooves its prison camps.
Not to mention during that time Woodrow Wilson resegregating the federal government that previous presidents had spent decades slowly and surely integrating, plus promoting Lost Cause propaganda (showing Birth of a Nation in the White House) leading to the KKK 's revival that Grant outlawed before.
Yes, proclamations 2525,2526, and 2527 targeted the germans, japanese and Italians. Being of Italian decent, it amazes me how many do not know that part of italian american history.
I have been reminding paisanos I know that they were only "white" within the last 2 or 3 generations...I say "they" since I'm both Sicilian and Jewish which puts me a little on the outside.
They rounded up some German Americans in WWII, too.
Most of them were members of the Nazi Party or pro-Nazi organizations like the German American Bund... i.e. active enemies of the United States.
There were MORE German-Americans who sided with the Nazis, than there were Japanese-Americans who sided with the militarized Japan.
Please don't confuse Deutsch (German) with Dutch (Netherlands). Two different countries, both Europe, neighbouring.
Yes, my great-grandparents did that on purpose. "Oh no, we weren't GERMANS..."
But they were 😂
My maternal grandfather was called Dutch. Although he was a swede 😂. (With my mother, he loved western shows lol)
Well, we're all Europeans now, so.. doesn't really matter anymore, but in the 50s...
Keep running the damn ball. pace @edsbs.bsky.social
Thank you for this. It’s really encouraging!
