(and if you're wondering "Why make review videos?" 1) it's a fun way to reach people w good info and 2) making nothing but "here's what's going on in farm news" is bumming me tf out. it's time for Balance)
So, I have thoughts about subsistence farming in the US, having personally experienced it, but this is perhaps a more interesting artifact m.youtube.com/watch?v=KnP8...
Pretty sure you can watch this w subtitles on YouTube: www.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202403/13/....
Unsolicited Thought: Clark Kent, raised on a farm, in KANSAS What kind of farm, what kind of crops, what setup In All-Star Superman #6, they take on seasonal labor The farm wildly varies through the comics and films through the years
Any of the Historical Farm series from the BBC! Classics in our household
The good life, either the initial british sitcom or the updated reality version with sue perkins
Some years back, on honeymoon, we encountered the celebrity version of Farmen, which is a Swedish reality show where people have to live on a 'historic' farm. Not sure how the original plqys it, but the celebrity version was all about getting them to do random tasks www.imdb.com/title/tt0298...
Somebody Somewhere HBO. Not centered entirely on farming, but set in Kansas and the main character’s parents own a farm and are seeking to improve it. Also it’s a great show.
This PBS documentary is older (1998), but beautiful & moving. www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/f...
Our son loves 'down on the farm', a children's show on the BBC. I have found it accessible and informative!
It’s not a show per se but would love to see your reaction to this…thing I got from my conspiracy theory susceptible friend x.com/WallStreetAp...
Just as plants can't uptake nutrients that aren't in soil (b/c modern agriculture has stripped them or destroyed the soil web that makes them bio-available to plants), meat can't contain nutrients the livestock aren't fed (or fed enough of).
Sure, and this isn’t the first time I’ve heard such a thing. The kind of stuff I’ve been pondering is if the nutritional delta is generally as big as that clip claims, is that a problem & could they be grifting by giving the animal that turned into the test sample a special diet to raise nutrient #s
Generally I’m not looking to hamburger for high nutritional value
It's not really a problem, no, unless you're eating beef as a *significant* portion of your diet. Otherwise you'll likely get all the nutrients you need elsewhere, except perhaps the omega 3s, which are deficient in most western diets. Could be a grift, but it'd take a lot of attention.
Correct. If you're eating beef for the carotenoids........honey I got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you
Daily fish oil supplements FTW
Throwback, but "Little House on the Prarie," perhaps? Maybe Yellowstone, even though that's ranching.
The Biggest Little Farm
The BBC had an Edwardian Farm series and way way back did "Living in the Past" which was a recreation (maybe) of an Iron Age farm. I'm curious how accurate either one was.
Tales From Green Valley was the first one of those "__ farm" experimental archaeology ones, which was excellent (though there was some weird rights issues which meant I had to pirate it to watch back in the 00s, which hopefully are resolved now!)
I was coming here to mention those BBC "____ Farm" shows. There are at least 3 or 4, I enjoyed them.
It’s a video game, but I would absolutely watch a farmer’s review of Stardew Valley.
Yes. I would also enjoy a real farmer's review of farming in The Sims 4's "Cottage Living" pack.
The farm economics of Field of Dreams?
Not really farm, but Rural Prairie Canada: Corner Gas. Yes, It's a Comedy. No, many people don't "get it." But it is most of the weirdness of living in small town/village Saskatchewan in a show.
Minari
If you don’t mind subtitles (or understand Welsh), Fferm Ffactor is a farm-based game show. Last I saw, S4C had a bunch of seasons available for international viewers.
I mean.. Letterkenny might qualify, especially the early seasons? Since the main characters are pretty directly said to be farmers (who we generally see doing damn near everything BUT farming) To quote the lead character:
"It's a hard life, pickin' stones, and pullin' teats, but sure's God's got sandals, it beats fightin' dudes with treasure trails."
Reality-wise, check out Homestead Rescue.
Pare Lorentz's seminal 1936 documentary The Plow that Broke the Plains.
The Real Dirt on Farmer John, 2005, documentary; buuut you did also say movies, sooo... Babe? 🐖
Have you seen Peter and the Farm? Absolutely wild documentary. Feel like there has to be something worth saying about it.
Chicken Run possibly, if livestock is close enough to work.
The Mrs. Tweety's Chicken Pies thing seems kind of close to some recent tweets (like the Ballerina Farm one)
This Farming Life! I think most seasons are available via BritBox, lots of farming via ferry representation. youtu.be/n2fABgQAT3o
Silver Spoon! City boy attends an agricultural high school. The creator grew up on a dairy farm. She also has a collection of autobiographical shorts called Hyakushō Kizoku. “Not available for streaming” 🙃 How do you feel about either piracy or reviewing the comics?
I enjoyed Clarkson’s Farm because it makes him look like what he is: a rich tit with a hobby farm who has to hire farming experts because farming is actually hard and he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
It’s Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear and punching a producer fame.
Horrible person but he knows how to make good TV
Did you ever see the French matchmaking show L’Amour est dans le pré, about farmers looking for love? It’s been running for TWENTY seasons!!!
There was a UK version, Farner Wants A Wife (2001 - predates The Bachelor as a dating reality show), and I think there are Spanish and Australian versions which ran for longer.
Cold Comfort Farm?
