Not gonna lie, I was screaming at my TV for a couple of days straight for him to call Putin’s bluff and admit Ukraine to NATO immediately. But oh well.
I think Europe's NATO members widely don't want Ukraine in NATO because (1) they want a buffer between NATO and Russia and (2) Ukraine does have some serious corruption problems. Long term and steely eyed, NATO is probably fighting this war to preserve that buffer, not for Ukrainian freedom.
Yeah, and that’s totally fair. But I certainly think holding Ukrainian membership over Putin like a Sword of Damocles and threatening to admit them and invoke Article V if he didn’t immediately withdraw would have ended this thing before it really started. I think it’s what Reagan would have done.
