I expect several million people would seek asylum (on genuine grounds) in the UK if they could, via safe routes. Whatever the rights and wrongs of doing that, a government that allowed that to happen would not be re-elected. Anyone disagree?

You're assuming anyone who wants to come to the UK as a refugee would be able to come but that is not at all the case. There are strict criteria to access UNHCR Resettlement programs and resettlement countries are fully in control of those criteria and have the last word on who can be resettled.

I'm not assuming that.

Ok, apologies for misunderstanding then. So why do you think that facilitating safe routes to asylum would lead to millions of refugees entering the UK? What is more likely is that those with existing links to the UK and better integration chances would be selected to come.

Have a listen to today's Today programme from 1h 10m, where Rajan interviews a Sudanese refugee and then Jonathan. That'll explain better than I can.
