Was it that part or the part where they bursted into coins upon death? It wasn’t the sun space highway? I’m pretty sure people can’t do that

“Oh look! Change!”
“Still not enough for bus fare.”
MOST REALISTIC PART
He had to break up with his underage gf first
He IS the best fighter in Toronto. Which is a bit like being the best actor in Regina, but-
It bothered me so bad when all of my male friends did not immediately get that Scott was an absolute piece of shit. The movie kinda failed the reflections Scott had to have to -not- be a pos anymore but a lot of the soundtrack (made by Beck) slaps
On the brighter side though, pretty much everyone I know that saw it actually *did* get the whole "from another perspective you can be the bad guy" message the story centered around. Scott Pilgrim was in some ways subtle about it and others fairly unsubtle about it.
In general I still appreciate artistic efforts towards stories I care about, even when some aspects are weakly transcribed to a different medium
I didn't even know about the comic when I saw the movie... and after I saw it I ended up roping in 3 different friends (one of them now my wife) to go see it in the theater. Whatever they might have changed or missed I think the finished product overall turned out fantastic. One of my favs for sure.
Did y'all get to play the game? Such a fun soundtrack akin to the old Simpsons arcade game
I played some of it at a friend's house, and yeah the soundtrack was great. It was a retro style game done perfectly, IMO. This thread is getting me thinking I should read the comics, after all if everything that's been derived from it is such high quality...
Book format just allows more content over a longer period, more time to fulfill themes etc. And the art style is very appealing
IIRC that last volume of the comic where he finally has the self realization that he's a terrible person wasn't out yet and the filmmakers decided to go in a different direction? I've only read the comic, though.
Comic is so so much better than the movie obligatory comment lol
Also the movie allowed the game to happen whose music was done by legendary chiptune artist, anamanaguchi and really helped them take off into the mainstream
I don’t know if it was the limitations of a feature film as a medium, or just the time it came out but even in the movie for the first quarter of the film they keep hammering in that Scott is a loser who mistreats people and I think it’s just because he gets the benefit of the doubt as the protag
It's so obvious that he's a piece of shit! It's so bad!
He’s also a pedo, Knives Shau was underage.
fucking thank you. he was a goddamn creep.
Yeah every battle with an ex was a moment of self reflection for Scott and was more about confronting his own insecurities.
Ive heard this experience before, but only ever from people who read it first. Anyone ive ever shown the movie to hates scott the most easy, but it would ruin the movie if they just shit on him the whole time. Its not good for mood or pacing. This is supposed to be a fun teen movie not Uncut Gems!
Absolutely! Only so much can be done when changing mediums, especially for a shorter time span on consumption of content so to speak. Takes longer to read the books, more content, it's harder to reduce down for a movie.
Definitely, with how much EVERY character is stripped down its great they fit so many in and they all had so much personality It really opened my eyes as a teen to what a director does, and the skill involved in acting, so even if its not perfect, its a great drug gateway to more movies
Gateway drug* obviously
I miss David lynch
Just watched Blue Velvet again last night actually. It will always be too soon.
Oh yes it's so good. Have you ever read his little book, Catching the Big Fish? It was a comfort read even on the first time through haha
I havent read it but ill be doing so soon!
probably would have been better for a 2025 audience to tone down or simplify scott's awful qualities, but i think 2014 audiences took it less seriously
Its not the GA its a couple loud kids online that every producer listens to. Sometimes people are a piece of shit. If we take that out of movies then why would we watch them
i agree it should stay in the movie but in the shorter medium it needs to take less time to acknowledge and resolve some of it like the comics, which i think may be easier with a focus on a smaller subset of his flaws
Its the most important part of the movie. The movie would not work unless knives gets hurt at the end. Scott cant just save the day, because he's an asshole and he needs to hurt and be humbled, and no amount of yearning will humble him. He has to make mistakes that matter
The anthropologist Joseph Campbell used to say it is our flaws that allows us to be loved in the end
He’s the Proto-Podcaster Boyfriend
he's also 23 cheating on a 17 year old
I thought he was 22 so i looked it up and he's 22 in the movie and 23 in the books Like that changes much lmao
The cartoon makes this extremely obvious and it's so good!
The cartoon was so good! I should rewatch it
