Two of my coworkers think that (I am not kidding here) tariffs are going to prevent them from cutting Social Security. One will retire in the next year or 2, the other is in his 60s. You'd THINK they would get a little educated on this...hope they have lots in savings since their SEP is 1/2 of 2024.

Well, I don't know about THAT...but thankfully it's cheaper out here in rural farm country, and they may have paid off their homes by now. But when those healthcare bills start rolling in, or if they need Assisted Living............

Yeah... I can tell you from personal experience they'll feel that bite. I live in "rural farm country" and the house is paid for after 30 years of living here but we're just barely getting by. Retirement and disability are no joke in this country and it's only going to get worse.

I am so sorry to hear that. Americans who have worked all our lives and contributed to the social safety net should not be forced to beg on the corner just to pay basic bills: we are a better people than that, and our Constitution & Declaration say we are ALL in this together. Time for law updates!

Sadly, it's how life is for many who worked service jobs, are or have become disabled, or have lost what savings they might have had to any number of catastrophic events. Social security is a safety net, but there are some pretty big holes.

And even MORE sad is how unevenly we tax for this safety net.

THIS Is why education matters. I'm not poor, don't collect unemployment, don't have schoolkids, will probably die before I "retire" & stop working permanently...but as an AMERICAN, I recognize the importance of SNAP, unemployment, schools, & Social Security, so I help pay for them. Not just about U!

I appreciate your approach, Chuck. I'm highly educated, but inept in many workplaces. I do benefit from SNAP, and have no hope of any real retirement like they sell in the"American dream" brochures.
