see i feel like "magic is math" and "magic is mysterious plot device" are are two completely different genres more than anything it's weird when people try to act like one is "better" than the other when they're going for completely separate things

one's an offshoot of the sci-fi/speculative fiction genres where the, like..... *speculation* is the whole point, the other is coming from the kind of fairy tales where Rumpelstiltskin is a metaphorical aesop instead of about the actual processes of turning string into gold

also a lot of complaints about plot holes or magic not being a well-explained system are actually complaining that the author poorly and very obviously wrote themselves out of a corner.
