My dear friend’s niece, who in October developed sepsis when a Georgia hospital refused her a D&C after a miscarriage, will be taken off life support tomorrow. I don’t know the names of the countless others who have suffered and will suffered because of anti-abortion laws. But her name was Haley.
I just found out about this, and I feel consumed with rage and sadness. She was 18 years old. She deserved a life.

Usually, the tide of support and attention ebbs away from mourners around the two month mark. That’s often when they find themselves truly alone for the first time. That would be a particularly good time to reach out to her. I wish her and all who are grieving for Haley comfort.

In my experience, about 3 months from a loss, people generally stop checking in—even people who also knew the person you lost. They start moving forward; that’s healthy & right. But close bereaved are still grieving deeply, so that’s a time your friend will probably need you.

According to current GA law this is neither negligence or manslaughter. There will be no pressing charges.
I don’t believe so. The family could argue that it was lifesaving care (true) and that does not violate the law even if there was a heartbeat. Additionally, DNCs are also allowed for miscarriage—and I believe they could successfully argue the medical necessity. I hope they do litigate!
Short of hiring a private attorney, just as you say, I hope they will go to legal aid at the least. I am a law student & so help me if I had my license I would do the approx 1000 miles to put that dump out of business & more importantly establish precedent, if the facts are correct. Heartbreaking.

Sometimes. I have had 2 MC in GA. Neither under current law, but recently. One was so early that Mifepristone worked. The second I was farther along so they allowed me to choose. I actually had to have 2 DNCs because they didn’t get everything the first time—their mistake and also a near emergency.
So, so stressful on so many levels. Those things stay with you all of your life and I think we keep them inside our hearts forever, quietly & sadly. “Only women bleed.” Having said that those pathetic, reprobate old men had better stay away from my womb.

Unconscionable, there need to be harsh consequences for the Georgia politicians who enacted these deadly laws, and the medical decision makers in the hospital that refused the proper medical treatment. Politicians and hospital admins need to go to jail for this.

According to Georgia law, there was no legal reason to deny her a D&C if she had already had a miscarriage. If there was no viable fetus, and there was no heartbeat, then the procedure should’ve been granted. She received poor healthcare. The hospital/doctor should be liable for her death. Tragic.
The law muddies the water and makes doctors and hospitals afraid. It makes them delay. The law is exactly what is responsible here. Legislators were warned that this is what will happen. They’ve been given evidence that it is happening. And they don’t care.

gonna poke my nose in to offer an answer to your question. Doctors aren’t lawyers, but we’ve put them in a position to choose between women who desperately need care and their own livelihoods or freedom/imprisonment. Most will choose the life of the patient. Some panic in the moment.

Additionally, hospitals are businesses and they will put their profit over the life of a patient any day. Several hospitals in states with abortion bans have closed their obstetrics units. Both maternal mortality and child mortality are up even more than the rest of the country in those states.
This is true too, and it’s not just because they’re losing money. They close because they want to avoid putting their clinicians and employees in a situation where they have to make these decisions and potentially be held criminally liable.
Clinics too. My daughter burst a fallopian tube in Texas trying to find a clinic to treat her suspected ectopic (she had an iud and positive pregnancy test). And she as just there visiting family!

It was awful, but luckily her fiancé’s mother is a retired nurse and knew of an older doctor not afraid to help her. The first clinic told her she was fine and to wait until she got home to see someone. By the time she saw him she was bleeding internally from a rupture, but she’s doing well now!
But yeah, thank god she listened to her inner voice because if she had trusted the first clinic and waited she might be dead now. I feel like puking when I think of it
