10 years ago, I found myself at a hotel bar in Louisville, Kentucky sitting Next to Doris Roberts, the mom in that show. She was with the woman who played Martin Sheen's secretary in The West Wing (she was also in Desperate Housewives). We had a blast. I never asked why they were in Louisville.

I never liked it but Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle made the show. It's the Seinfeld formula: insulate the lead with pro's pros.

The one thing I remember from Raymond was a Doris/Peter bit. At the opening, he’s complaining that she hasn’t properly “fork split” his English muffin. At the end of the show, back at the breakfast table, he opens his newspaper to see it’s been shredded at the crease. Doris says, “Fork split.”
