Or flick it into a container, and throw it out at the farthest end of the yard, if you don't want to kill them. I have a similar reaction to wētā, and have had since a child. The only time I've ever called for help with an insect is when I was about to step into the shower, and there was a wētā.
I’ll see if my carer is ok with doing that. She likes praying mantises. I’ll get her to put it in the front garden. There’s nothing out the back for them anyway. It’s a terrible place for them.
