I can't believe they remade that movie and did not fix its completely deranged premise! My daughter saw that movie when she was five or six and broke down crying and begged us not to get divorced because she thought that was how divorces work. The whole thing is so fucked up!

that's why the horror movie concept occurred to me - so many people complicit in this wildly sociopathic decision! i'm a grown-ass man (and a divorcee) so i could suspend disbelief but totally feel for your daughter

There are so many layers of it. It's not just the deception of the kids. Both parents are completely chill about never seeing one of their kids again. The whole extended family is just completely fine with it. I feel like there is probably something in the scifi or horror genre dealing with 1/2

Twins separated at birth but probably not as cruel a scenario as in the parent trap

Right it straightforwardly present this as obvious - that if there are two and they are identical then the parents can just split them in half like they’re interchangeable objects and one is plenty. Like wtf is that Parent Trap?!

Yes! Part of the monstrousness of it is that it the movie universe no one really finds this whole situation objectionable. Like when the parents are confronted with the other children they're like "oh yes my other child. I remember you."
