Also many union members (and by extension leadership) were virulently racist & would rather fuck themselves over than allow blacks to join.

I don't know if that led to the demise of unions, but it explains why there's nostalgia for the US factory environment of 50 yrs ago but little acknowledgement of an vital mfg sector today: the archetypical factory worker was a white anglo or ethnic, today they lean toward a darker hue.

One case where racism did contribute to the demise of a union: the Laborers Union. It was basically black men working to pay dues to support the lifestyles of Italian union officers. That eventually became too much even for the Democratic Party.
