This week we've had amber heat warnings in England, and confirmation that global heating is very likely to exceed 1.5'C within 3 years ... and this is the redevelopment proposal for one of Scotland's grandest streets.

Appalling. Have they learned nothing from the hotter cities of Europe? Green it up!
My work place is full of people making strategic decisions which, according to the climate-related risks I have identified, may be catastrophic. Yet, they continue to blunder into the future.
Seems like avoiding doing the right things on purpose, just to make room for the franchises and festivals 🙄
That image is the cheapest of three options. There are more trees, though not many, in the pricier option. Note they’re in tree pits - I think utilities / cellars are a big and expensive barrier.
Actually, hang on - I think they're actually putting the expensive one forward for the vote and not really considering the other two? Bit confused now.
More info here - there are also heritage concerns. I’d like to know which stakeholders were opposed to more trees. 4.5 onwards. democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/documents/s5... democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/documents/s5... - George Street and First New Town Operational Plan.pdf
Which confirms that the Council failed to consider the impact of climate change and the need for shade. Things that are/aren’t ok on George Street: Parked cars & buses ✅ Ice rinks ✅ Helter skelters✅ Spiegeltent ✅ Trees ❌
It seems that trees have now been added to the approved design. It's daft that they weren't an integral element from the outset. www.edinburgh.gov.uk/georgestreet...
I think 8 trees have been added. Based on the evidence of the new planting at Piccardy Place, I’d suggest that only 2 or 3 will ever reach maturity.
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
A whole eight huh?
Miserable plan on that length of street space ☹️
The shops and businesses there should think on it; a cooler and more pastoral street with *more* trees will keep shoppers coming in summer, partic vs competing St James Qtr & its air conditioning
and it’ll be far nicer too for outside dining and Fringe festival events, no?
I think use of George Street for festivals and events is a key factor in the design and lack of trees 🎪🎡🎠
😕 Probs. A consequence of that will be greater need for mechanised cooling & heightened energy consumption
Even by Edinburgh Council’s epic track record of stupidity & incompetence, that’s impressive: next to no shading or green space, and would just be a wind tunnel, because Edinburgh. A good conceptual match though for The Gilded Turd or the dystopian bleakness of Lothian Road/West Approach.
