I am pretty sure there was a jump in car widths in the early 2000’s due to the introduction of side-impact air bags and crumple zones.

Yeah. There is definitely something to that. My first car was built at the end of the 60s Dashboard was solid metal, feet about an inch away from the engine. No padding, no airbags. If you crashed, even slowly you were going to get seriously injured.

For a good comparison on YouTube there is a crash test of a 1959 Chevy with a 2009 Chevy Malibu. In the 2009 car if you had passed out before the accident and woke up after. You would have gone why are all the airbags deployed? 1959 vehicle the steering wheel was crushed into the drivers seat.
