What does that mean to them, liberal?, how is this ruining their lives, or is it like race or religion, they just hate it because they hate?

The Right Wing media has created a character of a “liberal” and likens that character to everything that is evil in society. There’s a whole lot of racism, sexism & homophobia built into hating this character.
