It's part of the authoritarian playbook, that's why. They don't give a rat's ass about what the citizens do or think, they are not intimidated in the least by the millions that may march, they're doing what they're doing because...they can. They know nobody is going to stop them, and they're correct

Bullshit. Imagine empty streets and chilling silence the day after they passed that psychotic bill. Protests are essential. Do we need to do more? Yes. And protests are essential.
