More than 1800 detainees are missing after the closure of Alligator Alcatraz. Their families and lawyers can’t find them and they’ve vanished from the ICE database. Feels like this should be a much bigger story www.miamiherald.com/news/local/i...

It's flashy for sure, but not much more than that. Rather too facile. There are really great Italian authors of that period, like Elsa Morante, Vasco Pratolini, Dino Buzzati or Italo Calvino (his Our Ancestors - I nostri antenati - trilogy has quite a different take in many ways on Italian history).

Also read the book and the historical context for it. The book is autobiographical sui generis, The major publishing houses refused to publish it, and it was largely panned by left wing literary figures - in the 1970s in my family as I was growing up it was certainly considered middle brow material.

The reports piggyback on "an annual survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census as the December supplement to the monthly Current Population Survey", see below. I do not think they cost very much, but sure, you could decrease their frequency and still collect the data.

This is, by other means, version 2.0 of the move of ERS to KC during trump1, which effectively set the agency back and reduced its portfolio particularly on env'l issues. Now they are gutting ERS because of its good work in showing evidence of structural inequities and poverty. A real disgrace.

Native American glass always takes me happy places. The beautiful beaded flat bag is by iah q, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. Above it is a porcupine by Heather Johnston (Unangan (Aleut) / Alutiiq). The two glass cacti on the window sill are by Robert "Spooner" Marcus, San Juan Pueblo (Ohkay-Owingeh).

Photo showing art around a small square window. On the left top is a photo of Rex, a turkey vulture from the Free Again wildlife rehab we used to volunteer at, then a Sardinian basket. On the lright is the porcupine, a ledger art piece, the flat bag in a shadowbox and a contemporary obsidian knife from SIU Carbondale metalsmith auction, further right is a Korean embroidery and a contemporary Italian orange cuckoo clock. On the left of the window is a cleaver from the SIU metalsmith auctions, a Zimbabwean wooden bowl and two butterflies in a shadow box. On the window sill are two glass containers with air plants on the sides, the glass cacti and a glass air balloon hanging. There is also a little frog fetish in the middle.

at the center of the efforts to destroy civil society in russia, hungary, georgia and elsewhere is the stigmatization, harassment, & criminalization of NGOs. that's what this is about, a full-on assault on democratic debate & freedoms. this is not hyperbole. it's right here.

As you well know industrial agriculture produces bountiful crops of boosters of many varieties, having had to deal with them for decades has made the whole attitude rather unpalatable for me. Plus, it’s often used by industry to put off the real hard but meaningful stuff.
