It's flashy for sure, but not much more than that. Rather too facile. There are really great Italian authors of that period, like Elsa Morante, Vasco Pratolini, Dino Buzzati or Italo Calvino (his Our Ancestors - I nostri antenati - trilogy has quite a different take in many ways on Italian history).

America and the English speaking West remake other counties' literary history w/o understanding the local context, version n.0.
Silvia Secchi (@profsecchi.bsky.social)
Also read the book and the historical context for it. The book is autobiographical sui generis, The major publishing houses refused to publish it, and it was largely panned by left wing literary figures - in the 1970s in my family as I was growing up it was certainly considered middle brow material.

This is, by other means, version 2.0 of the move of ERS to KC during trump1, which effectively set the agency back and reduced its portfolio particularly on env'l issues. Now they are gutting ERS because of its good work in showing evidence of structural inequities and poverty. A real disgrace.

Heeeās @civileats.com on the cancellation of the Household Food Security Reports. Clearly the goal is not just to hide the evidence of the current policies (if one can call chaotic kakistocracy that), but also to eliminate evidence of structural racism & inequality. They pretty much admit it.
