I was scared reading Facebook comments, but I am even more scared reading the Bluesky echo chamber. If we progress from intolerance to more intolerance, we become inescapable intolerance.

Maybe we wouldn't have to spend so much time defending ourselves against tyrants if we weren't tyrants ourselves...?

Proof is the hard problem. Humans don't do proof. We do inference. To reject anything without proof is to reject anything that humanity can do.

I might posit that the founding fathers were not a monolith that a meme could explain, and that kind of reasoning just might be the problem.

There are always at least two debates about truth, the first is your prior bias, and the second the validity of the data we can all agree on.

What can I see? I see a flea. With my own eyes, I see a flea. With a light microscope, I see a flea. With electron microscopy, I see a flea. With my own mind, only, I see a flea.

The expectation of change prior to giving a medication that will relax our high level models followed by an openness to change are all essential. That is the danger of the treatment... If treatment and aftermath are accompanied by maladaptive expectations, it could reinforce instead of replace them.
Ryan O'Leary, MD MA (@psydactic.bsky.social) reply parent
With regard to psychedelics, the taking of the medication can be metaphorically seen as the launch of a space flight. The preparation for the launch and navigation after the launch are at least as important as the launch itself.

I am not sure if existential meaning is the same as any instance of meaning making. Maybe it would be better if I said that existential meaning can be instantiated and modified as a function of the therapeutic alliance... ?

In some ways meaning can be measured by the therapeutic alliance. If a patient finds meaning in the relationship with the therapist, their chance of improving substantially increases dramatically.

I wonder if a better question than "Is A.I. conscious?" would be "Can A.I. make decisions about itself?"
Ryan O'Leary, MD MA (@psydactic.bsky.social) reply parent
@davidchalmers.bsky.social Is there is something it is like to be a murmuration like there is something it is like to be a hippopotamus. As a human I can imagine a murmuration has no such experience, but if I were to take the hard problem of consciousness seriously, I think I must. Should I?
Ryan O'Leary, MD MA (@psydactic.bsky.social)
Is the beauty of a murmuration of starlings the surprise we experience because of the patterns of movement... exploding, converging, splitting like droplets and recombining? We cannot predict it, except that it will recombine. It is no threat (or is it?). Why do we experience beauty and not noise?
