A recent episode of ABC's Back Roads about the town of Harvey in WA troubles me. If I were a rabid right winger, I'd be claiming it as a success story for integration and the old White Australia Policy. If a loony leftie, Multiculturalism. Perhaps we should simply celebrate a successful community.

I watched the report on ABC Queensland and my impression was: 1. The march was a great success. 2. Was peaceful. 3. Made the point that was intended. 4. Police made some poor decisions in crowd control. Very different to the old Vietnam marches of the 1960s. Lets hope police performance improves.

I agree with you. I am now long retired but "worked" beaches on the Northern Rivers in the 70s. Each problem has its own optimal solution, but owners in urban environments often sway LGAs to invest in sub optimal solutions due to perceived property values.
I empathise. You are though a couple of hundred years too late. By the time LG acts, those with the money, power and influence are those directly affected. The early 1950s was time for better decisions, proper planning and even property buy back, not now. Now is time for better 22 century planning.

Is Canada different to others? Most countries seem to adopt a "double barrel" approach where it is a combination of the conviction AND length of sentence that determines whether entry is allowed. If so, a certain judge, by being pragmatic at the time, did the world an injustice!

My two "heros" atm are the Australian Jewish Council and the late Pope Francis. Both promoted peace. Rather than blindly following the US into its wars my hope is that our Defence Force is recognised as a defender of peace. As well as defending our country, I would like to see a Peacekeeping role.

There's no restriction on leaving the country if you are a convicted felon. It is the other country's entry requirements that matter. Usually they seem to adopt a double barrelled approach. A conviction AND time served. A certain sentencing judge didn't do us any favours... đ
