He's a NYT alumnus, and the NYT definitely has prior art, here.

And those things have the turning radius of a child's tricycle. How do you fuck up this badly?

I'm not sure the distinction you're trying to draw here. The Republican has things that people are willing to turn out for. The centrist is selling compromise as a virtue, but just comes across... compromised. Nothing to excite people to turn out. Nobody wants to vote for preemptive surrender.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm referring to voters as a whole. The Republican motivates their base, everyone else gives it a miss, and you've got a Republican who is now claiming the mandate of the voters. Stop me if you've heard this one.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
Given a choice between a Democrat who is willing to yield ground to Republican interests and, well, *a Republican*, voters generally choose the Republican because the Democrat has no principles that aren't up for negotiation.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
Well he's wrong in that he has no real grasp on what normal people want, and hasn't for some time. He's "right" in that Democratic Party politicians sure aren't serving those wants and needs.

If only people would pay more attention to what Nate Silver thinks are important. Which are mostly things Nate Silver has put actual cash money bets on, because that's what he does now.

how do we get his companion quest

At the point where "Is Keir Starmer a transphobe?" isn't a useful question because "Keir Starmer isn't a transphobe but he thinks signalling support for them is politically advantageous" gets you to the same awful place.

Just his hairdo.

Kind of mystifying to me that we have models for Tech-Thralls but Heresy Mechanicum and Adeptus Mechanicus are not allowed to have crossover units. Like THERE'S your cannon-fodder.

Particularly, Trump does not intend to have a successor. Both terms, he intentionally picked a VP who might bring some strong allies to the table, but who is phenomenally uncharismatic.

If anything, we need speculative fiction more than ever, to serve as intellectual gut flora for *gestures wildly at everything.*
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, that's not new.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
"That seems overly specific and weird." "Are you suggesting that Trump doesn't merit being eaten by the king of dinosaurs while on a golden throne?"
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
Then again neither is waiting until he pops his clogs and The Least Charismatic Technocrat is up to bat isn't either.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
And even if it's a slow process, just lying about it while he is less and less capable to do the world's most stressful job which literally ages every single person who does it much faster than normal is... not ideal.

...dammit now I need Fritos.

And well, an image it took you under a minute to create isn't going to inspire anyone but the absolute fuckmuppets, who can't be counted upon to *implement* your fascist utopia.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
Fascism is extremely based in aesthetics and these people don't want to pay artists. Ironically AI is surprisingly capable of generating fascist imagery, which makes me side-eye that training data, but somehow they understand that putting AI generated images in public spaces would be cringe.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
You can post GIFs from a library, you can post videos, or you can have your GIF turned into a static image. It's very bass-ackwards.

I will remind the Democratic Party that there is no compromise with the people who are calling for institutionalizing or interning trans people right now. There is no convincing them of anything. They are beyond any reasonable negotiation or placation.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, like I'm looking up guides to make sure I get this thing.

Yeah, The Strange was my first big plunge into Cypher. I'd gotten the Numenera corebook but never really got the bug until all that setting-hopping goodness. I still have the totebag!

@flanneldude.bsky.social - YOOOOOOOOO!
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
In fact, that's got all the makings of a pretty good adventure. You tell stories about that for years.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
The way he was beaten involved using one of the rarest treasures in the setting to infiltrate the lair, playing head games with the dragon to bait him out of his lair, and then BARELY managing to get word to one of the best archers of the age about a very hard to spot weakness. That's not nothing.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
And the way he did so is by being a pretty damn smart dragon. He's got a lair you don't really have any hope of penetrating without significant help (the One Ring, no less). He's girded himself against the typical vulnerabilities of dragonkind. Literally armored himself with gold and jewels.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
Like think about what we know about Smaug from the bulk of Tolkien's work. Dragons were far more common in a prior age. Sauron and Morgoth bred them. Smaug is not the most renowned dragon (that's Ancalagon the Black) but he is noteworthy in that he's pretty much the only dragon we know that survived
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social)
Saw a discussion on how you'd put Smaug, or something similarly momentous to Smaug, in a fantasy RPG campaign. And a common gripe in that was that he's "just" a dragon. I feel like if you're playing a game where Smaug caliber dragons are common, you're in a very different setting from Middle Earth

The lower you put the de minimis, the more staff and hours you have to put into enforcing duties. Customs officials have better things to do with their time than penny-ante bullshit.

(seems to be no way to revoke it, either)
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
Did you do the prelaunch landing page? That seems to be an oddity of Backerkit. There are projects I never backed but clicked the "I'm interested" thing, and I get updates months, even years after they ended.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social)
The De Minimis Exception was to everyone's advantage, the US especially, and both enforcement and compliance are going to cost way more than the pennies removing it will bring in. The vast majority are going to just not ship to the US.

Cracker Barrel has always been sort of an imaginary museum of an America that never existed. It was always a little bit fake and manufactured, and it's just weird that some people decided it was singing the Song of Their People.
Brian Griffith (@qlippot.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah, but consider this: Whiteness is a conscious giving up of culture and heritage, ostensibly in exchange for privilege, but actually has historically been a bait and switch to shore up the societal dominance of the already privileged. Manufactured culture is all a lot of white people have.
