I thought I knew a huge amount of behind-the-scenes trivia about #DoctorWho but, browsing the pdf archives on the Season 8 Blu-Ray Collection, I just discovered something I did NOT know: "The Time Monster" was originally going to be called "[The] Daleks in London"??!!!!
🤯 My brain wants to rationalise this curveball as being that Time Monster was a completely new replacement script after Sloman's plan A got abandoned, but "is now called" is pretty emphatic it's the same /story/ not just the same writer writing something else for the same slot.

It's funny for C21st eyes to see a camera treat a police box with no more interest than a lamppost or a bin. Even when not the star of the show a director now knows the audience will mostly be thinking "ooh, like a TARDIS" or "what's that kiosk?" and it'd need some kind of full shot even in passing.

Should probably explain how the toy car is a scale model of Sarah Jane's Austin Metro... That we found we couldn't get out of the box correctly.
In 1998 Gus Van Sant directed a shot-by-shot remake of Psycho and nobody could really figure out why. But somehow I feel that we're auteurs on the same page here.
The scarf prevalence is interesting because it shows how sketch writers know they can spoof this thing and even people who haven't watched it for ten years will get the jokes, and probably people who've never watched it too, a rare and helpful commodity when you need ½hr of gags on BBC1.
Listening now and so much teenage cringe/anger is flooding back. They fall into 2 camps really - "wouldn't it be funny if Doctor Who was..." (Lenny Henry) vs "isn't Doctor Who SHIT?" (Victoria Wood).
