This is where the slow bureaucratic collapse comes in though, blue states have to be careful about framing and convincing everyone that their rejection of federal overreach is american enough that the rank and file soldiers would defect rather than be effectively deployed.
But that is a huge assumption. If they fully nazify the military, rather than the reluctant compliance we’re seeing rn, then we’re in a much different game. Who pays for all of those aircraft carriers? And what do they do about the California-China trade ships that go against the federal government?
Yeah, there’d be some weird shit happening. I will say though, all of this is highly dependent on how the military chooses to play its cards. I’m kind of assuming they do the equivalent of sitting on their hands and maintaining international order and slowly get dissolved into national guards

Maybe ‘EU-ification’ of the U.S.? That’s what I think is most likely right now. It’ll really depend on a lot of things though.
And just piece by piece, federal authority getting routed around. I think it’ll still exist for a long time though, if only as custodians of hard to decentralize things like nukes + the fed.
Basically, long balkanization as governors get used to thinking of ‘our’ and ‘their’ troops (e.g. what pritzker is saying rn about Chicago being invaded), orgs like the western states pact find some hole via states rights and enable more deals like Canada’s ‘only retaliatory tariff red states’
Honestly, I think U.S. collapse looks like a dissolving or minimizing of federal authority more than anything else. California and Texas are both strong states in their own way, and things are too wound together for an entity like the U.S. federal government to effectively govern.
Anyway, all this is to say that it seems the kind of anti-police-brutality stuff we saw in 2020 with george floyd has made its way into other countries.
e.g. the way some portray occupy as being the american flavor of the wave of resistance that happened a few years earlier during the Arab Spring.
I like to think of tactics of resistance as having this kind of inverse boomerang effect, where people in one place throw down and a few years later, you see people throwing down in the same way thousands of miles distant.
It’s more like ‘I know the kinds of guys who do that kind of thing, they’re not going to stop until someone makes them. So how do we protect our friend?’ The person in question could: leave town, have a medical incident, sudden change of heart, etc. But they usually don’t, so act like they won’t.
You can never escape the uncertainty of the future,,, but usually it’s not that bad if you just make your guesses vague enough :D
But when you have sufficient information to judge the consequences of your actions to a certain degree of certainty, then you’re obligated to those consequences instead and must go with that choice.
Yeah, I basically think of the three big theories as being derivative of the amount of information you have access to about a situation, for consequentialist reasons. Unclear everything? Try your best (Virtue ethics). Lots of uncertainty but some clear patterns? Deontology will take you a ways.

And I don’t think econ people are _wrong_, about markets. I think trade is freedom maximizing and vital to information processing as a whole. So, why is there a contradiction here? Either my assumption of how freed markets compete with unfree markets is wrong, or there’s something else.
(I’m not an expert on any of this stuff) Fundamentally, freed markets seems like the default. Authoritarians have to expend a lot of effort convincing the population and maintaining control. If freed markets are so good why weren’t they able to maintain global dominance?
Interesting point. Whenever I can, I like thinking about why we lost the last 10,000 years, and I think there’s something about information / coordination capacity that kind of shapes the possible ways a freed market can exist.

I totally agree and I think the reason Mamdani drives them to such extremes is that he has already disproved that narrative. His campaign was _not_ built on kissing their ring, and never has. They are already irrelevant at the very thing they are these days.
