This is a controversial opinion some places, but by season 3 (with some exceptions) the show has completely disappeared up its own arse, everything is a montage basically, and there is no plot. Season 4 is a small return to form.

I’ve been reading the culture series - supposedly the favourite series of Zuckerberg, musk etc - and you can REALLY see where they grab a lot of this sci-fi stuff from. conveniently they focus on the AI stuff while ignoring that the books are about fully automated luxury communism in space.

I recently saw two teenagers benching. One of them tried with 80kg and got nowhere close to a full rep (his friend had to help him - he could barely lift it). He then resolutely got up, picked up at mat, put it on the bench and tried again, with the same result. Then they left without cleaning up!

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

When a chatbot gets something wrong, it’s not because it made an error. It’s because on that roll of the dice, it happened to string together a group of words that, when read by a human, represents something false. But it was working entirely as designed. A major danger of LLMs is that humans are SO predisposed to attribute knowledge to any entity that uses natural language fluently. We cannot imagine that a machine that outputs natural-seeming speech/text doesn't have cognition. Brilliantly articulated by @emilymbender.bsky.social et al. (2021).
