You know what Otto? I've been wanting him to succeed because the alternative (Tories/Reform) doesn't bear thinking about. But coming out with this statement is beyond the pale. Imagine Blair or Brown saying this? They wouldn't as they were strong focused politicians. Our PM is a coward sad to say.

That means that if you try and implement policies which block people seeking asylum based on their manner of entry, something which is illegal to do anyway, you want stop people coming, you just force them to be undocumented. It's counterproductive on every level. 9/ #r4today

Labour's latest act of pure cruelty in talking about further restricting family reunification routes is a perfect example of making things worse. When you close these routes you don't change why people seek asylum in the UK, you just force them to use irregular routes to do so. #r4today 7/
What won't help the situation, or public perception, is absolutely everything which Labour, and the Conservatives before them, are doing in terms of deterrents, detention and deportations. We have seen how these policies, and this is not just the UK, drive more people into irregular routes. 6/
You need to provide people seeking asylum with the right to work, so they can support themselves. As an aside, this, through reduced government expenditure and increased tax revenue, is estimated to bring in about ยฃ8billion, so more than the asylum system costs now. 5/
Once people are in the country you do also need to have active measures obviously. These would include investment in community support schemes, shown to provide better, more humane, accomodation at lower costs than hotels or camps, while also supporting local communities. 4/
These measures would include things like scrapping carrier liability fines, which penalise carriers etc if they allow someone to travel who they think may seek asylum when they arrive. Implementing fast tracked humanitarian visas. Removing visa restrictions on high asylum rate countries etc 3/
If, and there is no single silver bullet here, they were to make it safer and simpler for people to seek asylum, without those people feeling that they have to use irregular routes, then they could reduce channel crossings, thereby reducing the pictures on front pages. 2/
The main issue facing any UK government isn't actually the number of people seeking asylum, in the grand scheme, proportionally, we aren't talking about huge figures, especially when compared per capita to countries such as France, but the constant images we see in the media. 1/
