I've seen Wagon Wheels you people wouldn't believe. Chocolate pouring over the shoulder of biscuit. I watched jam glitter in the dark near the marshmallow sponge. Full sized Wagon Wheels will be lost in time, like summers full of rain. Time for tea.

Have you considered using these a little like marketing tools? Off the top of my head leave them on tables in trains or in cafes. If Book Crossing is still a thing you could register them with that, so that people who pick them up know they can take and read them. Get a journalist to write about it.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
It never went away. What you mean is, Blood Bowl is unnecessarily rereleased, as is the way with all GW products. Stand still in a Warhammer store for long enough and they’ll rerelease you.

I think I’ve got an explanation for this. The people in the adverts are —and this isn’t a good word, but it’s an accurate one—morons. These people, with their pasta cookies and dry yet wet faces, need something to run their lives for them. And we must pity them. The AI isn’t for us, it’s for idiots.

Writers, keep writing. Do not buy into the hype train telling you your job will be replaced in a few years. Those using AI are literally atrophying their brains ability to be creative. The future will need your words, your creativity, to function well. publichealthpolicyjournal.com/mit-study-fi...

Honestly, no-one in the tube is standing examining posters. They’ll see the part flag design, they’ll see the word British and they’ll think British Airways is having a marketing push. Very few will pause to think ‘nazis’.

I have no clue how the US legal system works, but I’m a lawyer myself and in my jurisdiction it would be a very simple case. And extremely easily winnable. Strange that it’s not where you are. Also I’d expect they’d settle before it ever got to court.

If this is a book you’ve written threaten to sue. Or actually sue. Outside America we get the impression you guys like doing that a lot. A complaint won’t move them, a defamation case will, mainly because they’ll have to try to pass on the payout to the AI company, and there’ll be heads rolling.

Since writing that post I’ve found out the guy is an open supporter of anti-trans organisations so I think this is the prize trying to lurch toward being LGB only. And thereby derided by everyone else. All other authors and judges should leave. It’s not a prize without them.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
It doesn’t seem like it was a mistake. Look at who founded the prize—who is on the judging panel—and the comments of those who are currently running it.

Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
If an Act is found incompatible that part will be suspended and sent back to Parliament for amendment, but it’s fairly rare this happens since the lawyers that write the Acts on behalf of Parliament are experts. SI’s can just be struck down, but only the bits that are under review.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
Also most UK legislation is in Statutory Instruments, which are subordinate to Acts and written by government departments. As they’re not voted on by Parliament they’re easier for the government to change if they need to, and are fully judicially reviewable.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s true that the Supreme Court can’t say “this Act is illegal because we don’t like it” since there’s no separation of powers as in the US, but they can say “this Act is unenforceable because of this other Act which hasn’t been taken into account”, like with the Human Rights Act.

Internet sleuths reckon it’s from an Anglo-Saxon verb, “kop”, meaning “to catch”, which we still use in “it’s a fair cop” or “cop a load of this”. More used in northern England which had less influence from Norman French.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
I think Old Norse kept the soft sound longer than Germanic. Our Anglo-Saxon Wotan was already established when the Norse brought Odin to northern areas, which had the soft d—a hill near me called Roseberry Topping comes from Oth’s beorg tor pen, Odin’s hill hill hill. Danish must’ve changed later?

I can’t tell you how often as a kid I drew the Spider-Man (venom) cover from number 8. The revelation that you could highlight black with blue was a game changer.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
So presumably it was originally, or at least related to, “adder”, which we also use for our only venomous snake.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
Would this be related to the runic thorn, like the letter that looks like a d in Odin?

I thought it was because of the metal their badges were made from, but I think I like your version better.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
In fact I suggest an intelligence & empathy test for voters. You get extra votes above 1 based on how you score. You can take it many times through your life, and it would ensure the people best suited to deciding things got the most say. PR unnecessary & teens unlikely to get much influence.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
Teens would inevitably vote over-emotionally or as their parents tell them / indoctrinate them to. Both outcomes are a wasted vote. Humans don’t even develop full empathy until they’re 26, and I’d be happiest if everyone under that age had the vote removed.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
The average 16 year old would vote for anyone over 21 being sent to the cringe gulag, and free crocs with socks for everyone else. They’re not people with the skills to understand what the country needs. Left wing parties always support this idea because they think teens are inherently left wing too
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
And as for giving 16 and 17 year olds the vote, why in gods name would you want to? In this country we spend all our time blaming them for society’s ills and telling them their exams are too easy. Then we give them the vote and tell them they’re trusted in running the country?
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
Post WW2 we set European governments up with PR deliberately to hamstring them from effective decision making. It was cynical. Anyone who’s lived in a PR state knows how difficult it is to pass legislation, or keep a functioning government for longer than a year. That’s not what our country needs.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
PR is a system deliberately tailored to give a compromise on every decision, which is the weakest form of government. It’s only supported by people who wrongly think their opinion should always be heard. That’s called entitlement. Many opinions should never be heard.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social)
This seems to be an unpopular set of opinions today, but both PR and 16/17 voting are terrible ideas. The party of government has the support of the largest slice of the people, and you just have to put up with them until they’re gone. Which they will inevitably be.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve gone out of my way to avoid “pay what you want” scenarios. They’re just not British. You, person offering a service, put a value on your time and skills, and I’ll pay accordingly. Don’t make me commit a faux pas by undervaluing you, and don’t ask me to feel obligated to overpay to avoid it.
Dan (@ravenson.bsky.social) reply parent
