Hey, are you games PR with some Switch 1 codes to burn? My neighbor's kid turns 12 this month and long story short, has had a rough year! Grandma (helped raise him since mom is single) passed away, he's helping mom with disabilities, etc. But he's a great kid. Looking to surprise him with some games

The shot on the left is mildly misleading in that hovering over those controls will then highlight a larger target area, but that's also kinda the point: you can't "hover" when you're using your fingers.

But all the multi-fire modes etc gave PD these many many extra layers to learn… which gave me an extra leg up because I had the time (and the game itself) to learn it. It just felt a bit too unbalanced in that sense, so we dropped it quickly.

Multiplayer didn’t click for me, but that might be my specific experience of the time. I was the guy with the N64, my friends played when they came over (or I brought it to theirs). GoldenEye was so simple that you could pick it up relatively quickly and compete.

Living through the Perfect Dark hype cycle and seeing the result was rough. So much talk (spin) about being freed from the Bond IP to produce a better story; so much hope (desperation) that the N64 would have a darker, more mature title... and in the end, we got Elvis.

Yeah, this is a whole other thing. The prestige and loss of face are hard to parse. I guess the Winter Games coming first will be instructive to see how they handle the World Cup, to see if they do try to host a small portion of it on site to claim "it worked!"
Ravi Hiranand (@ravi64.com) reply parent
I think it's definitely a bad look for them to descope the project, not disagreeing with you there. But it's not Qatar, it's a decently-large country with a few large stadiums already. Solving this doesn't involve, idk, defying the laws of physics, it just involves a lot of regular construction.
Ravi Hiranand (@ravi64.com) reply parent
I don't think those things are as hard to solve as Trojena though. And World Cup plans are often wildly over-optimistic. Remember, the accepted Qatar bid was for a summer World Cup. Japan's 2002 bid promised holographic matches in unused stadiums. Those things quietly get shelved... (cont)
Martin Calladine (@uglygame.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
The chain of dependencies is so darkly comic. A Winter Games. But it doesn't snow there. And there's no rivers. So they need to fill a massive reservoir. Which needed to start being filled already. But they haven't built the desalination plant yet.
Martin Calladine (@uglygame.bsky.social) reposted
Fascinating piece about how, in effect, the critical deadlines for delivering the games have already passed. Given how many heroic assumptions are built into the 2034 World Cup plans, one can only wonder if that infrastructure can be delivered either. www.ft.com/content/6dfc...
Ravi Hiranand (@ravi64.com) reply parent
Does the World Cup depend on Neom, though? Loathe as I am to pass up a chance to clown on their insane, obviously-not-happening plans, the World Cup just needs 12-15 stadiums. And they already have more stadiums and more football infrastructure than Qatar did. It won't be fancy, but it's doable?
Ravi Hiranand (@ravi64.com) reposted reply parent
Grinding is not a celebrated part of gaming. It's quite boring really, a repetitive slog for minimal rewards. But it's about progress. Small progress, sure, but still progress. And that's a powerful feeling when you're in a dark hole. ravi64.com/grinding-thr...
