This ‘blue states closed schools too long’ narrative is becoming increasingly entrenched in the Polite Center but it’s arguable at best. Republican states had far more deaths during COVID and their students have roughly comparable learning loss.

To wrap up what I’m saying is that kids do well with predictable structure. A clearly laid out room, predictable routine in class, whole class invested in teacher & student expectations. If they know what to expect & you don’t feed the derailers, that’s like 75% of classroom management right there.
Sorry, it should say “the whole continuum of childhood in one day.” It’s exhausting.
I’m currently in my third full year at my school, and learning & growing with these kids has been wonderful. First week of school this year felt like we picked up exactly where we left off. I loved watching my middle school kids grow but this is different, in such a beautiful way.
Middle school folks are like “well aren’t specialists teachers??” and yes but it is DIFFERENT. It is SO DIFFERENT. It’s like whiplash, because you get the continuum of in one single day. And classroom teachers have their own microcosm of society to deal with.
Also, handling my classroom is my job. Always has been since Day 1. I was definitely too harsh on some kids in my early years, trying to prove myself, but I also did everything I could to prevent discipline from going up the line. I barely ever gave kids referrals. Annually, maybe. All in house.

In an elementary setting, classroom teachers & specialists have to be on the same team. That has to be made clear. Mutual respect regarding time (drop-off/pick-up) and working through concerns as a group is paramount.

LRT: my child’s life has had a LOT of grandparent time in it (still does) & the three grandparents with us have put in a lot of work with the kid. Childcare affordability & aging grandparents (my FIL is 80) are another reason we only have one.
It's one of the wilder things I have been noticing about caregiver expectations from younger generations. They want to know why the new grandma's aren't stepping up for their childcare needs. Meanwhile grandma is still working a full time job to keep body and soul together.

Have been thinking a lot about identity, both from a scholarly perspective & a personal one this year. Sometimes I think it’s okay to feel a little adrift or maybe loosely tethered because then you get to define who you are yourself. But we all want to feel like we belong.
I mean that would be great. It’s not going to happen in 2026 or 2028 though. It might never happen here in Florida.
