It's gross. I'm doing a poor job of saying what I'm thinking. With Tananarive Due, I went in with no expectations of what was coming except a story and I found it really good. Maybe too fast in some ways, but the mythology involved was so new to me and so exciting.
The awful thing is that white authors get promoted because they're "mainstream" and all sell, but they're mainstream sellers because they're promoted. Meanwhile, a huge swathe of humanity is passively silenced.
Absolutely. I've read a bunch of latinx authors due to my area, but until fairly recently I haven't seen many others around. But I read Tananarive Due's THE GOOD HOUSE and it absolutely blew me away. And what I noticed is that even the cadence of her writing is different from what I usually see.
It's bizarre to me how few authors of color get recommended...but I've found the differences in culture, music, even critters is more interesting now that I am actively trying to expand. I've even found music through those authors. It's being an interesting journey.
Reading your posts has given me a lot to think about. So I'm going to look into DEATH OF THE AUTHOR and widen my whiteboy perspective.
