This is so true and I thought of something similar while bike commuting to work this morning. So many drivers only feel like they have any control in their lives when they are behind the wheel of a vehicle and active transportation takes some of that feeling of control away from them.

Yes 🙁. I always asked for ice packs and used them during the half-hour wait after the shots and the itchiness was gone by the end of the half-hour. I think they have cream too though
I did allergy shots for 3 years. So worth it—including the itchy arms.
Yet another example of how effective SRTS Coordinators have at least a working knowledge of multiple disciplines.
I’ve had a crash course in understanding how street construction projects are completed as Richfield has been working on two Safe Routes to School infrastructure projects this summer. This is one area where my previous career as a machinist has helped—because it helps me understand the blueprints.

I thought this is train trip was $45 each way. Why would the average person ride a 7-hour train when they could fly in 1 hour, 40 minutes for the same price. Did I miss something here?
Scratch that—we didn’t realize it would cost $600 for 3 people to take the train to Chicago and back. That’s just ridiculous.

I enjoyed the engagement portion of our planning grant—but agree that we probably could have done it ourselves. At least now we have another document supporting our respective case(s).
Oh god I had stipends in last year’s boost grant and that did not go as expected—and I get paid to do this everyday—I can only imagine how tough it was for you. 🙁
Ah that makes sense. You are correct that the process should be easier. With one of our schools we were able to skip the demo project phase and it will still be a 3-year process before the new infrastructure is installed.

What type of SRTS grants are you running? SRTS demo project grants and SRTS infrastructure grants have allowed us to make permanent infrastructure improvements for student families who walk and bike to our elementary schools here in Richfield.

I wonder if fear of the Feds pulling funding dollars is driving this. If so, we should push county to adopt Orange option and develop back-up funding plan OR delay the entire project until they have more certainty about the federal funds and can move forward with the Orange option.

Richfield had to find backup funding and get council approval before moving forward with our TAB-funded SRTS project. Could be that the advocacy angle here is finding a back up funding source in case the fed dollars fall through—if that fear is reason given for this concept design
Is there a chance this concept design was influenced by new guidelines for federal grant-funded projects?

I use a wedge pillow because acid reflux was preventing my sinuses from draining while I slept. Adding the wedge pillow has significantly improved my life.

Sometimes I miss being able to spend 4-6 hours cleaning my house on a Saturday morning instead of watching a toddler spend 4-6 hours destroying my house on a Saturday morning. 🤷🏻♂️

Am I the only one who is tired of delivery drivers with their noses buried in their phones speeding on the streets where our children play?
My assistant called out sick today so I’m solo supervising 10 kids (aged 7-10) at bike camp for 3 hours this morning. AMA
You can be pro-city without being anti-everything else. Suburbia isn't disappearing, so instead of treating it like a lost cause, start treating it like the fixer-upper it actually is. Healthy suburbs are possible.

I taught 13 kids (age 5-8) how to ride bikes this week. A couple of those kids were extra grateful.
It’s funny the parental roles we can take on/take ownership of and how it feels when the other parent assumes the role briefly.
I always sit next to my toddler when we dine out, but tonight we are at Brasa for supper and my wife sat down next to the toddler. It feels so strange—like I’m abandoning my baby. 🙃

Today I’m co-presenting (with Minnesota Department of Health) on the topic Safe Routes to Parks at the annual Minnesota Safe Routes to School meet-up. This will be my first time presenting to fellow active transportation professionals and I’m excited to share what we are doing here in Richfield.

Today was a good day—I biked to daycare for drop-off, commuted via bike (NE Minneapolis to Richfield) and led group rides all day at work. From 7:30am-4:40pm I was only not riding a bicycle for one hour.

FB informed me that 11 years ago today I purchased a used bicycle and started cycling again for the first time as an adult. It would have been impossible to predict then that this small purchase would lead me to eventually changing careers and working in active transportation.

Insurance companies have a vested interest in the drivers of the vehicles they insure obeying the law.
I’ve been noodling on this idea for a couple of years now: would a 311-type app that forwarded pictures of fleet vehicles parked in bike lanes to the insurer of said fleet vehicle work to eliminate fleet vehicle drivers from parking in bike lanes?
