For sure, not to whine about little purchases but right now i have an order from UK's Lock Books that is halted and lost in transit, and couldn't make planned orders from Kus or HDK records this week I wanted to support
It's the suddenness of the change with no warning. The uncertainty and erratic nature of changes to businesses that have their production costs and shipping costs etc planned months in advance Goes without saying but even 'temporarily" halting all shipments to the US shows that they screwed this up
Exactly, the chilling effect is already happening at small publishers we know in EU if you've ever run a mail order, you know that any changes to shipping rates, let alone losing the ability to send orders to entire countries... that uncertainty alone can completely tank and shutter your business
For sure, it feels like a small workaround but the uncertainty alone is extremely chilling
i know what you mean though, i'm certain you could get away with shipping a single issue of something in a "large envelope" without any customs paperwork, but the hassle and risk makes it super annoying (as someone who sends zines to Australia as "large envelopes" under the radar) A STUPID MESS
it's literally ALL shipments that aren't letters, as I understand it - at least temporarily. the uncertainty will remain even if they roll this back. as someone who has done mailorder for 15+ years, not being CERTAIN a package will make selling to that country (and that risk) tough to justify
To be clear: it doesn't destroy those systems of course, it just 86s a big customer (us damn Americans) and leaves Americans sidelined and cut off from our friends and partners in publishing and culture

sure, i read about these things and stay abreast of new tools, i've read Angie Wang's essays, heard the podcasts about symbolists and connectionists. i follow the discourse and look at examples of "what they can do" sober brain says: don't let them gain any foothold, we must simply abstain
not saying this for hollow congratulations but: I've never used Chat-GPT in my personal or professional life. like, no LLM usage ever - not once. ditto for image generation tools it may be my sober alcoholic mindset but IT IS POSSIBLE to just never accept them in your daily life. reject them!!!

Shared similar advice on instagram but: If you're a cartoonist who is unsure about anything to do with a publisher, ask cartoonists who have worked with them! Your peers are the only way to fight the opaqueness of institutions! It will help you avoid bad situations and ask for better contracts.

Naomi (age 8) is working on her new Undertown zine... The theme is "music" I encouraged her to make one about archery - she's been shooting really well at Woodley Park in Van Nuys (popped a balloon at 40 yards last weekend!!) but she says "No!! Undertown: Music is next!!"
