Wow, I didn't know you were on Jeopardy! I know a guy who actually tried out for Rock & Roll Jeopardy - they wouldn't let him on the show because he was TOO knowledgeable lol (and he even tried to get one answer wrong on purpose). In retrospect, that show was much easier than the original Jeopardy.

I’m a lifelong East Coast native (NJ native living in NYC though my mom’s family is from Oklahoma) and some of these Midwest references kind of fly over my head. Still fun though, I love hearing about different places where people grew up.
Voted Madonna, the videos/singles from that era are childhood favorites. Though I feel kinda bad for that Peter Murphy album.

Heh, there are a few artists/bands here where I would have picked a different track personally. And at 82 tracks there's only room for so much (no Galaxie 500, no My Bloody Valentine, etc. etc.) but overall it's still pretty fun and comprehensive.
I also loved No Thanks!, that was the first box set I ever bought and if you're a fan of punk and post-punk it's definitely worth a listen.

LOL at “This Corrosion” into “Senses Working Overtime.” The box set is very nostalgic for me and I guess it’s supposed to evoke a mixtape? Though it feels more like a playlist on shuffle at times. I like/love most of the actual songs though, the RHCP track is easily the one I skipped the most. 😉

Ministry reminds me of getting into '80s alternative in my late teens/early 20s (I listened to the Left of the Dial box set over and over that features "Stigmata") as well as attending a beloved goth/industrial club in New Jersey (18 to enter, 21 to drink). Easy vote here.
Nothing against Bonnie Raitt but the keyboard gloss of that album is everything I despise about the production of that era. I kinda like "Thing Called Love" and it's not even an original. (The John Hiatt version also features Ry Cooder on guitar and Nick Lowe on bass!).

My parents (who are both deceased now) always had some CDs - they did enjoy music - and my Mom always had lots of books. The idea of being mad at someone for having too many records/books/movies/whatever is really sad to me.
Curiosity has always been an underrated personal trait but now it feels like it’s being actively discouraged?
I know it’s awful and fascistic and people are losing their jobs and getting death threats **just for posting things he actually said** but it’s weird too, right? We are having a national mourning over a YouTube 31 year old youth leader? It’s friggin weird and I’ll die on that hill.

I was listening to an old Casey Kasem American Top 40 (I find this soothing these days) from 1985 where he told the story of Wendy Carlos, who scored The Shining and Tron, and her journey to becoming trans. Casey got all the pronouns right and it was presented as a slice of life, feel good story
A friend of mine was on Charlie Kirk's "watch list" of Black professors. She received so many death and rape threats that her university offered her a security detail for the walk to class. This is Kirk's legacy. You would never know it from reading all of these legacy newspaper op-eds about him.
I’m at the local strip mall chain restaurant. It’s absolutely packed with families. The tv at the bar was playing Charlie Kirk coverage. The bartender said “enough of this” and switched it to baseball and everyone started cheering.
Also it will be very interesting as we go forward into the 2000s and backward into the 1980s. I can’t wait for the Best Album of 1980 tournament in like 10 years, I will nominate 500 albums. 😈
Hope there are some cool hidden gems at least (that's true of every era in music). I loved IS THIS IT? when I was 17 in 2001 but I won't be nominating it (I kinda like a few songs here and there out of nostalgia) because it doesn't need my help lol.
"Obscure" is kind of meaningless with the internet anyway, even albums not on Spotify/YouTube can be found in other places. Lesser known is a better term maybe?

I have PMS2, the mildest form of Lynch Syndrome, which carries an increased risk of colon, endometrial, and ovarian cancers. Some forms are much worse so I consider myself lucky. (My mom passed away from ovarian cancer last year though she was 74).

I turn 41 in October and there's a lot of overlap between Gen X and elder Millennials (my dad worked in computers so I've always been particularly internet savvy - and AOL was big when I was 12/13). And compared to some people on these apps I feel like old lady Rose from Titanic lol.

Great thread! I'm an elder millennial (born in '84) and my dad was a computer programmer so I was something of an early adopter when it came to the internet. I'm definitely a bit jealous of people who grew up on 120 Minutes in the '80s - when I was in HS it was the height of Total Request Live.
