🚨 Update from the ongoing Appropriations Committee debate we’re having about funding for labor, health, and education
If we want to have a healthy, growing economy long-term, we need an educated workforce. If we want our country to remain competitive for generations to come, we need to invest in our public education system.
Republicans are refusing to give educators across the country the financial support they need, especially when it comes to Title I funding that provides money to some of the poorest districts in America. In El Paso, we could lose up to a thousand teachers without Title I funding.
I don’t understand why we can’t come together and fund education in our country. Instead, Republicans are dismantling the very system meant to prepare our children for the future.
History will not remember this decision as a defense of liberty. It will be viewed as the grave failure of the highest court in the land that it is.
As Justice Sotomayor said: “We should not have to live in a country where the Government can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low wage job.”
This decision sends the full-throated message that Americans can be treated as suspects not because of their actions, but because of the color of their skin or the language they speak.
The court has effectively legitimized discrimination under the guise of law and order, given government-sanctioned racism a green light, and, again, abandoned its duty to protect the rights of all people.
The Supreme Court’s conservative majority decided today to permit racial profiling, betraying the Constitution and the values it’s meant to uphold.

I understand and appreciate the value of USPS and the postal workers who serve El Pasoans every day. That is why I do not take lightly my obligation to conduct oversight when I consistently hear from my constituents that USPS is not meeting acceptable standards in our region
There have been several types of USPS casework inquiries, with the most recent trend being El Pasoans not receiving mail at their designated cluster box for months on end.
Our community needs answers to casework issues, updates on current and future operations and maintenance, staffing challenges, and infrastructure needs. USPS is an agency that El Pasoans seem to consistently have problems navigating, and in turn, open casework with my office.

And there were still not enough federal employees on site to perform appropriate oversight. This $1.24 BILLION corporate-run facility should not only NOT exist, but in a rush to be "operational," it's clear that DHS was willing to serve bad food, limit legal access and more.
Construction had just been completed for the family and legal visitation that had been completely unavailable for the first 11 days of being "operational." Legal organizations couldn't meet in person with their clients for nearly two weeks and had difficulty connecting by phone.
One man said he was in pain and in desperate need of surgery (saying he had urinated blood) but was only given OTC pain meds; another was promised meds for severe allergies and never got it; all described being fed foul-smelling food and drinking water that made them sick.
Some men had work permits that were canceled, or were in legal proceedings to adjust their status when they were apprehended. Many of the men we spoke to had come from Florida's "Alligator Alcatraz," which was shut down by a federal judge, and described terrible conditions there.
He'd never been arrested, wasn't speeding or breaking the law (he was racially profiled). His U.S. citizen wife tried to get his truck, phone and the cash back, but she was told that if her husband wanted those items back, he'd have to go pick them up (he was in ICE custody).
One man was pulled over in Sebring, FL while on his way to buy construction supplies. Local law enforcement arrested him for driving without a license, confiscated his truck, cell phone, $1500 in cash that belonged to his construction site supervisor and he was turned over to ICE.
Among the men I spoke to: a long-haul driver who worked in the U.S. for 31 years; a small business owner who owned a salon and lived in Miami for 27 years; a man who worked in construction and others. Most have U.S. citizen wives and kids, pay taxes and were part of our economy.
My team and I spoke to a couple of dozen detainees (about 1400 men were detained on 8/28). Only one detainee had been in the U.S. for about a year; most of those I spoke to had been living and working in the U.S. for decades - one elderly man had lived in the U.S. for 37 years.
I first visited on 8/18, the day after it was declared to be "fully operational." IMO, it wasn't ready then, and it wasn't ready 10 days later when my team and I went back. One of the biggest issues for me: not enough federal personnel for strong oversight. elpasomatters.org/2025/08/18/i...

Trump and Congressional Republicans are inflicting needless harm and pain on our country by demonizing immigrants and separating families. They are enriching private immigration detention corporations and their shareholders, weakening our economy, and making us less safe.
Did you know it is estimated to cost $20 billion dollars to COMPLETELY END homelessness? That’s less than half the amount Republicans are planning to spend on migrant detention facilities through the “big, beautiful bill.”
Imagine what $45 billion spent on mass immigration detention could do to help Americans? It could provide access to childcare for working families, create affordable housing, repave the roads in our community; it could help Americans with affordability issues as costs continue to climb.

Aside from the warped priority that this massive expansion of immigration detention represents, its historic expense, and the gutting of programs for Americans to fund it, this camp has already taken away from military resources and will pull from some of our local resources.

Trump wants to deport every immigrant possible – ordering a minimum of 3,000 daily arrests – whether they have legal protections, are in legal proceedings or are Dreamers. It’s all about fulfilling Stephen Miller’s fantasy of deporting at least a million immigrants a year.

While Donald Trump said he would focus mass deportation efforts on “the worst of the worst,” and Senator Cornyn said Camp East Montana would only hold those with final orders of removal or criminal convictions, none of those claims are true.
There were 1,000 male detainees on site during my visit and the capacity is expected to grow to 5,000 and hold women in the future. Unlike previous oversight visits I've made (during the Biden and first Trump administrations), I wasn't allowed to speak with the detainees.
During my 30 minute press conference after the tour, we watched truckloads of supplies delivered to this $1 billion camp that requires significant resources for construction, food, cleaning, technology, laundry, security, healthcare and more for 1000s of detained immigrants.

Even in Texas, despite cries from Republicans about "rampant voter fraud," the Republican Attorney General has only found 33 "potential noncitizens who allegedly voted" in 2024. Out of 11.3 million ballots cast, that's 0.0003% of votes cast. www.kxan.com/news/texas/t...

“I don’t like that you prefer immigrants over citizens! I’d rather have a Republican represent me.” I work for El Paso, period. I bring home resources that help veterans, small businesses, local governments and more. I’m proud of my record of delivering for our community.
“I want that Republican representative being my member of congress.” You can vote for a Republican or a Democrat, but you’re not picking your politician here – quite the opposite. This politician is picking you. And he’ll be hundreds of miles away from you.
“Can’t you still work for the areas in El Paso you won’t represent?” I will of course try, but each member of Congress has an obligation and a responsibility to focus on the people and assets within their districts.
It’s easier for him to vote against our interests because he’s not around very much. Has he ever even held a town hall in east El Paso to hear from constituents?
“Okay but why does that matter?” Representation matters. If your new Congressman doesn’t care much about El Paso, he won’t work to bring resources back to the community or work to help you.
“How does the proposal affect El Paso?” The map strips major parts of El Paso County, all of Fort Bliss, our airport, and the new VA Health Care Center (that I was able to secure $700 million in funding for) from our boundary and gives it to a Republican 500+ miles away.
“Why is Trump doing this?” Midterm elections happen next year, and he’s worried that Republicans who voted to gut your healthcare to pay for tax breaks for millionaires with his “big, beautiful bill” will lose their races. So he wants to rig the next election via redistricting.
