I think I was already married when that came out. My childhood TV was mostly in the Dark Ages between the original Star Trek and the reboots.

Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb.

This is why even calling it AI is not just wrong, it's evil.

"we've found a new way the LLM is evil!!!!!" "is the LLM evil or did you tell it to act evil" "... told it to act evil"
Resuna (@resuna.bsky.social) reply parent
There is no way to ask a LLM to "check the assumptions". If you ask it that it will just generate a plausible extension of your question but it won't be any more likely to be correct.

I have mild prosopagnosia and I'm not "unnerved by beautiful faces". They're not victims, they're just awful people.

Cue tge plot of "Permanence" where the government battleships were restricted by the license to their software and had to quit chasing people lest their starship turn off.

My last phone cost me under $300, a Motorola with an actual built in stylus like my Palm from 2000. I even have a Graffiti input method that actually works. I have never paid as much as $500 for a phone, and generally a lot less.

That's how we end up in Nancy Kress's "Beggers in Spain" trilogy.

They're about the only animal I can think of that can hang out inside a building without somebody going full metal broomstick on it as soon as they see it. Even a dog is likely to get chased out.
Resuna (@resuna.bsky.social) reply parent
Domestic shorthair cat would probably be safest for an actual animal. Hardly anyone notices cats except to go pspspsps at them.

Evil Overlord List 12. One of my advisors will be an average five-year-old child. Any flaws in my plan that he is able to spot will be corrected before implementation.

I am 100% sure that all those pictures of them and their families and kids are already in the databases that have been scraped off the internet by OpenAO and Google and Microsoft. Because Facebook is part of the Internet.

I hate it, because it's not AI, it's a parody generator, and anything that comes out of it has to be assumed to be wrong until you actually check it because all it does is generate credible sounding sentences. All it knows how to do is to make up stuff that a human might possibly have written.

OMG Fallout being inspired by "A Boy and His Dog" makes every bit of sense in the world and suddenly I want to play it and I don't play video games.

I have always used directly connected drives for Time Machine because that baroque "Time Capsule" scheme for NAS backups seemed to be just asking for the Fuckup Fairy to come a-calling.

I think it comes from early neurological theories about how neurones in the visual cortex process images, which were then rhetorically generalised to 'this is how the brain works' at the time. As it happened, it didn't quite work out like that.
Resuna (@resuna.bsky.social) reply parent
It doesn't work like your brain works. It works like a 1950s model of how the neurons in your visual cortex work.

I'm never going to use it because I can't spell it and I can never remember which specific cyberfuturisms it stands for or why posthumanism isn't in there (or is it?). I'm going to go with David's "Roko's Pudding".

Inspired by, maybe. Dick didn't care at all for the screenplay but got to see bits of it before he died, and said they got the pictures in his head onto the screen.

I used WindowMaker because it was pretty lightweight and ran nicely on my Toshiba Libretto maxed out with 64MB of RAM. The NeXT user interface with the weird floating menus was awful. And the best part of NeXT was the packaging system, really. And the Linux community keeps reinventing it worse.

I got the same advice from my dentist some years back and when it came time to go to bed I couldn't get it off. So I went to sleep and didn't choke to death on a cap and it was still there in the AM, so good?

I just realized that since my new phone has an integral stylus I might be able to practically use the Graffiti Android keyboard I bought several years ago. And yes, it's a mite slower than the tap tap keyboards but even rusty as I am (I still have to keep checking the chart) I make fewer mistakes.

I thought Wayland was lighter weight so faster and with less latency. I hope it is, because that's basically the only justification I can see for replacing X11 with it.

Exactly. It's like how almost all the news about anything you actually know anything about is obvious nonsense. Except the machine isn't actually an expert on anything (not even being an actual thinking animal) so it doesn't occasionally understand what it's doing by sheer chance.
