I also noticed how Connie's in an emotional lowpoint in the new season. She's in a loveless relationship with Chane that she insists is poly but it's obvious he's getting more out of it than her, she's forced to keep up her parents' lies just to keep up appearances at a country club, etc.
And I do ponder on how much of that's connected to how kids' cartoons in general are in a far worse place now than 20 years ago. Because VAs back in the 90s could get steady work on a 65-episode cartoon, and now western cartoons are lucky if they can get beyond 10 episodes.
In a way, it is. Like it's cool that not every single Asian girl in cartoons is played by Lauren Tom, and every single black dad is Kevin Michael Richardson, and VA pools are larger, though I kinda miss the familiarity there.
That and how Kahn's the chill one in that episode.

Yeah, I rewatched a couple eps from season 1 last month, and you can tell Judge was still thinking this would be the Tom Anderson show before giving Hank his own identity. Or the scene where Dale believes all Asians eat dogs, which is a huge contrast to how he's pretty broad-minded later on.
I also figured out a way the new show can bring back Luanne. Like a far-future episode where she's voiced by Dolly Parton and she's telling her grandkids about some wild adventure her uncle Hank had.

I also think, something I mentioned on AR a week or two ago, is the lack of any real kids' cartoons that aren't established IPs means she doesn't have much of an opportunity to get new roles in the first place. It's usually either celebrities/producer's friends/VAs who usually do anime instead.
Yeah, it adds an unpleasant element to a character who usually isn't used for black comedy. And it makes everyone around him come off bad.

One of the problems with post-Golden Age Simpsons is how it wants to have its cake and eat it too with some status quo changes. Like when Homer killed Maude but treats Flanders the way he always does even though the first part decimates their prior dynamic.
There's a spitefulness to Hoover that you never really get from Krabappel, since she treats both Ralph and Lisa with disdain. Doesn't help that later seasons made Ralph go from stupid to genuinely mentally disabled, which adds a really sour taste to Hoover's character.

I mean, Nancy Cartwright's a professional voice actor and she's seen as part of the main cast.
I remember they recently tried to a do a sympathetic episode about Miss Hoover, but it failed because Hoover just kinda sucks as a person and as comedy fodder compared to her 4th grade counterpart.
And it's weird, since if the show's gonna go on forever, it can do it without any of Taylor's characters. When was the last time Martin was that important? While Krabappel's absence is pretty noticeable whenever I see any of the later episodes.

Found some old cartoon heads who think anime is an exotic territory they struggle to understand, and I thought that was a dying breed in 2025. Speaking of, I just remembered The Simpsons had Andy Dick guest star in a later episode. And considering the gossip about Dick and Phil Hartman, something frequent Simpsons actor Jon Lovitz believes, it seems more in bad taste to do that than if they did immediately recast Hutz and McClure.
I don't want that to happen, since I just don't see any appeal in bringing back Troy McClure to a Simpsons long past its golden age. But I know it's not out of the question.

Because it's not like Sherri, Terri, or Martin are important enough characters that you need them to keep the show going. While one of the many issues with recent Simpsons is how the show clearly doesn't know how to fill the void Krabappel left whenever they do school episodes.
Remembering how The Simpsons producers didn't have the heart to replace Marcia Wallace and killed off Mrs. Krabappel, but immediately recast all of Russi Taylor's characters when she died. Did they just like Wallace more as a person?
