It is actually true that I write all my posts with a Meryl Streep accent.
Even someone who is always making the snappy joke in person eventually comes across as boorish and insensitive. It really doesn’t work any better off line.
The “unforgivable sin” apparently is that “he’s inept”. Who thought a confessed adulterer married three times, a business man who has filed for bankruptcy six times, and a president who staged a failed coup was ever “competent”? Apparently many Americans, who now “resent his ineptness”. Now????
Bottom line, if you aren’t sure it’s going to land well…listen to your gut and don’t make the joke. If the person you’re always “joking with” never jokes back, they aren’t enjoying your humour. If there’s no response at all - let it go. Don’t double down. I promise it won’t help the situation.
3) Read the room. If someone is posting about something serious, or if they are clearly being serious in their post, it’s not the time to tease. Let your response fit with the tone of the original post. And yes, you CAN detect tone if you read thoroughly, carefully and take a moment to think.
2) Just because your favourite posts of theirs are the “snarky” ones, that doesn’t mean that they only “speak in sarcasm”. If every one of your replies to them contains a slight punch, you’re going to look like a jerk….because you’ve given them nothing else with which to assess your character.
1) You need to have established a trusting enough relationship with someone to get away with it. They need to know that you fundamentally respect them and your snarky joke doesn’t reflect how you actually see them. Having posted a few times on their feed doesn’t establish such a relationship.
Friends, here’s a social media tip: I like a sarcastic quip or a teasing dig as much as the next person, (I mean, it’s a real skill I have) but there is an etiquette to using “dry wit” and “dark humour”. And some of you clearly have not taken that course so, let me share a few points…

Offices @stjohnsdixiechurch.bsky.social had new floors installed and walls painted. Now we start on basement with new tile flooring, drywall, repairs to foundation and new window wells installed. In two weeks we see if the parish approves the budget for the major renovation of our parish hall.

Anyone ever watched a movie that unexpectedly triggered deep emotion over trauma you thought you’d successfully processed and moved on from? And if so, were you watching it on your iPad while running on a treadmill in a packed gym? I do not recommend it.
So maybe there will be a little labour on Labour Day.
It only helps if you are not 1) determined to hate trans people more than you actually care about children’s safety 2) in the pocket of the NRA or politicians who are.
