agreed, i don't think anyone is taking that position either. i just worry sometimes about what laypeople can infer, and bad faith actors can exploit, when we're not being clear on which aspect of the profession of science we're talking about when we say something is or was "science"
it was accepted by scientists, insofar as "scientists" was a profession heavily gatekept to make sure women and non-white people weren't allowed in. in that sense, it was science but the research supporting it was always pretty shitty, as pointed out by some contemporaries
i guess i view the idea that eugenics was "science" as something that can confuse a few different aspects of science. one aspect is what is accepted by the scientific community. but a distinct aspect, which does not overlap near as much as we pretend, is how supported the idea is by the research
