We’ve seen almost all of this coming for about 20 years and the response from liberalism and the Democratic Party has essentially come down to “vote harder” and don’t do anything else. I’m not optimistic. Even if Dems somehow win in midterms it seems pyrrhic.

One of the biggest blunders (when well-intentioned) and betrayals (when not) in Democratic rhetoric over the years is their impenetrable insistence that what voters respond to is somebody who begins by finding common ground with their opponent, no matter who that opponent is or what that ground is.

I keep coming back to Lincoln’s vision: Government of, by, and for the people. And so a radical, rapid Constitutional overall and subsequent investment in democracy (e.g., public funding of elections, independent redistricting, AI alignment). Policy then flows from that. We will have to fight hard.
Democrats owe it to the country to think through this stuff and be honest with themselves about whether they’re really up for the fight. If they are, they can telegraph it to voters by fighting harder between now and next November. If they’re not, they should yield to new leaders.
