These thoughts just struck me, lots of people who have helped shape British identity were illegal migrants: Romans, Saxons,Vikings & Normans, and they came in small boats!

It's easy to explain, Trump is a scoundrel.

Pathetic, privileged white guys mocking the less fortunate.

Yet another hideous re-writing of history by MAGA. Soon slaves will be labelled illegal immigrants.

Beautifully observed & written - even if the subject is so disturbing.

Even if God is listening, most US politicians are not listening to God.

The repeated failure of US politicians to deliver responsible gun control laws is a stark revelation of a society in deep trouble. Yesterday, the country suffered its 146th school shooting this year, and what do most politicians have to offer? 'Thoughts & prayers.'

Thanks for this Andy, a clear & convincing summary of a dark period that may get even darker. You explain the problem well, sadly, I can't see any hope that your suggested solutions will happen.
Ian Lance Richardson (@ricojosh.bsky.social) reply parent
Hardly surprising from a convicted criminal & Trump sycophant.
Ian Lance Richardson (@ricojosh.bsky.social) reply parent
There is far more to fear from the protesters than the migrants.

Israel's denial of the famine in Gaza is despicable, and almost everyone the world over knows it to be false.

I often disagree with John Bolton, but that doesn't make him a 'lunatic.' His 'crime' is, of course, that he exposes Trump for what he is - an ignorant charlatan.

Shame on me - Conisbrough is spelt incorrectly in my article, entirely my fault. I was always rubbish at spelling, unlike my fellow Ashton Grammarian, Meg Copeland-Gain! Go to the bottom of the class.

This makes my point about Halifax Piece Hall, an astonishing slice of Tuscany in Calderdale!

This is an excellent summary of what has unfolded since January 20th. The pace of democratic degradation is astonishing. Sadly, it is likely to outlast Trump. When he has finally gone, the rot will continue. Half of America no longer cares about democracy.
Ian Lance Richardson (@ricojosh.bsky.social)
This is staggering & the media should have made far more of it. It's a giant Russian F.U. to Trump, Ukraine & the European coalition.
Ian Lance Richardson (@ricojosh.bsky.social) reply parent
In Trump's case, chocolate dildo is more apt.

Putin says the 'root causes' of the conflict must be addressed before peace can come to Ukraine. Agreed - but Russian imperial ambition & he himself are the root causes!

It's hard to understand why the UK doesn't have an effective way in which people could apply for asylum without risking their lives in small boats.

A fine article builds a clear & convincing case. The danger grows with each passing day. America appears to be sleepwalking into some mutant form of autocracy. Many experts already describe it as an anocracy; a debased form of democracy with authoritarian aspects.

Fabulous article Colin, written in your characteristically clear & highly informative style. My own piece for Bylines on 6 of the best Yorkshire rail journeys will hopefully go live today.Yorkshire could well be seen as akin to a German lander or US state; province nor region quite cut it for me.

It's hard to respect a government that claims greenhouse gasses are not a major contributor to climate change. They may as well deny gravity or claim the earth is flat. Of course, the Trump regime have now done exactly that; anti-truth, anti-science & antithetical to all that is rational & decent.

It's hard to imagine how millions of people might feel if they woke up to undeniable proof that they twice elected a serial child rapist. The hard to imagine, could well soon happen, & it won't be pretty.
