Apologies for the rant. As an eastern Kentucky liberal, this stuff hits very close to home.
Using their own words against them does more harm than good. The solution is to *show them* that we actually care about them. Talk to them. Get to know them, so they get to know you. Have events in their area, be seen.
Our govt, politics, culture & society have revolved around white people for so long that they don't even realize what was happening to everyone else. Their fear-fueled scarcity mindset says it's a zero sum game: including everyone else means losing some for themselves.
Then tell the kid that most of the developed world is like that. Their "normal" is actually a very narrow & isolated group of people that US politicians don't care about & don't talk to in the name of "including" everyone else.
Imagine a 12 year old kid from a backwoods farm in Bunghole, Alabama suddenly waking up in an NYC bar during a fabulous drag show. There would be a lot of confusion, anxiety, alienation, & a strong desire to leave & find some "normal" people.
The biggest fear is just change. White rural Americans are used to a stagnant way of life. On the national stage, they are now seeing people that are black/brown, LGBT, environmentalists, globalists, etc., but those aren't the people they see in real life everyday. The world is leaving them behind.
The reason Trump has them enthralled is because he actively speaks to their fears, stokes them further, then gives them BS about how he will fix it. Dems don't really acknowledge the fears of the avg rural American, much less talk about it in an emotionally engaging way.
