A lot of parents have a way of treating their kids like some sort of underclass of person, they search their rooms, they monitor their communications and they are never to be treated “like a friend” which is how my parents were. I hated them then and I’m not super friendly with them now.
But logical debate is not for values. Values are emotional and come from the human parts of us. Insisting that there are neat labels, logical constructions for things as messy as our goals and dreams and values is the kind of systemic dehumanization Charlie Kirk advocated for and we should resist.
Insisting that people have to have rational beliefs is fascism. You are depriving them of their humanity and constraining them to an Incomplete and arbitrary system. (And I say this as a lover of logic! I have a degree in analytic philosophy I LOVE LOVE LOVE logical debate!)
Also the idea that ANYONE has coherent or rational politics - you, an assassin, your congressperson, the president - is an inherently fascist idea. Political beliefs are emotional and often irrational because they are human beliefs, and we are emotional & irrational by nature. That's okay.
I totally get it, but I think "our side is not the bad side" is just not the side I want to be on. I believe that the need we have on social media and online to reduce people, even heinous people, to just labels is the exact kind of alienation we need to be fighting.
