It feels good to support good journalism, and good climate journalism in particular!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
If you don't support Heated by @emorwee.bsky.social, you really should. She has a great piece today about the current heatwave, which climate change made many times more likely, and how to think about it in the context of the Big Beautiful Bill heated.world

Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
If it helps, they didn't fly me to any of those places either, so I relied on copious amounts of research plus interviews :)
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Need more amazing astronomy pictures and science in your life? You can watch the live press conference about the Vera Rubin Observatory's first images here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dF1g... #CaptureTheCosmos ππ§ͺ
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Okay that's really cool!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
And then there's a graphic novel about the solar system with Jon Chad, a book for Atlas Obscura with Dylan Thuras and Joy Ang that was a NYT bestseller, a fun book about critters using social media, and an older comics collection (pretty much out of print alas). Okay, that's a lot.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I'm so happy to hear that!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Then there's Expedition Backyard by me and @binglin.bsky.social, an exploration of urban nature. It features some VERY cute urban critters and plants. It's an 2022 ALA Best Graphic Novel for Children and winner of the 2024-2025 Beverly Cleary Children's Choice Award.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
These are two more sciency picture books: Butterflies Are Pretty... Gross and Flowers Are Pretty... Weird. Kids seem to really like these ones.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
There Are No Ants in This Book is a funny science picture book that (shh) has many ants. It's a 2025 Texas 2x2 List 2025 Winner, Canadian Childrenβs Book Centre (CCBC) Best Books for Kids & Teens, and a Dolly Parton's Imagination Library selection. The art is by the wonderful Anna Pirolli.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
#9 is A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching, a funny but deeply researched guide to those perfect birds.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I realized recently that my latest book is my 10th book(!), which seems wild to me because I still sometimes feel shy about calling myself an author(?!). I thought I'd do a thread of all my books. My latest is The Birding Dictionary, a tongue-in-cheek guide to birding terms.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Enjoy!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
How do you write so many books??
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Wow!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
All that said, I think itβs super important for us to question why we do this, whether itβs helping, and if we could do it better, and I appreciate this question for making me think a whole lot about this
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Thereβs a couple other things to consider: measures of science literacy are narrow, and I would also not necessarily agree that we are in a golden age of pop science
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Sorry that should have been βwhat Iβm doing and why.β Iβm a professional writer
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
bucket but popular science led me to do what I do, which led people to understand their urban environment in an actionable way, and by god I will take it
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I sometimes wonder what and why Iβm doing. But last weekend at an event I had multiple people tell me that my book about city pigeons led them to understand this species and handle a pigeon encounter appropriately, including rescuing birds and giving them a good life. This may be a drop in the
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Iβve definitely also experienced ideas from pop science moving through the general public and helping people take action to protect themselves and their environment. So I think that the point could be measured in ways other than improving general science literacy
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I think that this is an interesting question but 1) getting a small cadre of nerds on board with conservation issues has been useful for my causes and 2) I have heard from laypeople whoβve taken action because of my work and that seems meaningful
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Iβve been a fan of hers for years, read her book, she always helps! Sheβs the model for climate comms imo
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Blocked and reported
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I think the discourse is very fractured. A reasonable % of the public, myself included, doesnβt know what to do with this sort of thread at this point beyond battening down the hatches. I volunteer for a climate org, contact my reps, vote for climate, and live moment to moment, and thatβs all I got.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Also butterflies will eat poop, and if the poop is too dry they will pee on the poop while eating it, FYI

Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I wrote an entire childrenβs book to teach kids about the gross stuff butterflies eat and do, and I have zero regrets
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
They sure do!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I think that might be an immature red shouldered hawk.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Oh this is wonderful
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Yes they do!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Now see THAT is what I'm used to in a flounder. That one is flounding really well
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Also, I immediately thought of @tkingfisher.com for some reason
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
It's wild to think that flounders could be anywhere at any time. They could be right next to me, or maybe on the ground, just hiding in secret, waiting for the perfect moment to flound
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Where I live, you can sometimes find juvenile flounders by seining or even snorkeling around. I'd just never seen one with this amazing shape. Fish are the best
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Yep, I've just never seen a flounder with quite such a unique shape!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I mean I have seen many a flounder, but this eye arrangement is just wild!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
It's called the Eyed Flounder because it has... eyes I guess, and lest you think that this drawing exaggerates its shape, fear not, weary traveler Image from iNat, Β©Sue, some rights reserved (CC-BY-NC) www.inaturalist.org/observations...
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
that's really true
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
How to tell a Cooper's Hawk from a Sharp-shinned Hawk. An oldie.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Oh honey Iβm so sorry.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
You'll enjoy it for sure. It's specifically targeted at birders ;)
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Tomorrow evening in Sandwich, Massachusetts I'm doing a book event at Titcomb's Bookshop! Most of my events are nicely packed, but so far there aren't many RSVPs for this one. So please share, and please come out and support the wonderful Titcomb's (and me!) titcombsbookshop.com/event-conten...
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
π
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I came here to say this
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
If it helps, it was super packed and they didnβt let a lot of people in!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Ashanti colored a book of mine and did a spectacular job.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Iβm excited, Iβd been wanting to see the big pigeon for ages.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Other things I experienced: -many elaborate pigeon outfits, including these two people who were wearing the wikipedia article on pigeons -people with pigeons on their heads -signing books next to other pigeon enthusiasts, thanks to table space from Wild Bird Fund -celebrity pigefluencer sightings
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
PIGEONFEST NY! Yesterday I did a book signing at a pigeon festival on the High Line in NYC and it was one of the best, most surreal experiences of my life. The festival took place next to Dinosaur, a huge pigeon statue by IvΓ‘n Argote, who I got to meet!!!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I was there!!!

Happy #PigeonAppreciationDay to all who celebrate! Please enjoy this relevant comic by @rosemarymosco.com who has been one of my favorite artist since the 2000s. rosemarymosco.com/comics/bird-...
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
lol
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
It's a Wilson's warbler
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Happy #InternationalPigeonDay . Just sharing my little post pigeon Mr Coo whoβs story Iβm still working on. June 13th was chosen to commemorate the death of Cher Ami, a pigeon who helped save the lives of 194 soldiers in WWI. #pigeonday #worldpigeonday #pigeon #pigeons #birds #kidlitart #kidlit
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
<3
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
It's currently called Wilson's Warbler, though there's an effort to change the name to a non-human name.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
No, you need specialized equipment, so I take classes at a pottery studio where they have kilns. You can buy mini kilns that can do a few items but I haven't done that.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
But I didnβt look at someone elseβs stuff. Nobody owns kelp and garibaldi. Iβm a science cartoonist and garibaldi are extremely well known fish from the kelp forest that I like to draw!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I take classes at a studio! There's no way I'd have the space.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
What are you confused about?
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Someday I want to go snorkeling with them and see it in person.
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Pottery has really been helping me during these last few months. And look, I make a kelp forest with garibaldi!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Gorgeous columbarium!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Have you seen our amazing riso prints by @juleshroom.bsky.social ? Now you have! grab one here ππ¦ campmustelid.shop
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Hey, Iβve been noticing a lot more people are suddenly policing swears lately. Are you finding this too? Someone else was noticing this, maybe @chuckwendig.bsky.social?
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
This is so good!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I mostly remember, as the dot matrix printer screeched and screeched, them saying "wow, this is... long"
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Was I aware that there were other types of novels one could write? Heavens, no
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
In 7th grade I used to get home from school and disappear into the computer room. And boy were my parents thrilled when, after six months of this mysterious behavior, I printed out an entire Redwall ripoff novel called OCEANFLIGHT and forced them to read it
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Oh my goodness yes, mine was a Redwall ripoff with North American animals so I thought I was being original. The main character's name was an anagram of his final form and there was an irrelevant chapter about turkey vulture society
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Yes I loved that one!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
What does it say about me that I assumed this was about leftist community organizing? π Iβll check it out!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Yes, I adored it!
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
A suitable epitaph for me lol
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
Can anyone suggest a light game for mac? I recently enjoyed Strange Horticulture and Rise of the Golden Idol, but I found Baba Is You was a touch too thinky after a long day of work
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
I use this expression constantly these days. Usually when this happens
Rosemary Mosco (@rosemarymosco.com):
In honour of my new baby and in honour of not supposed to be working, over the next few weeks I'm going to post this short story called 'Fledgling' I made for my patreon 2 years ago. This is part 1/14.
