For almost the whole of England. We’ve been warned to expect gusts of 58mph overnight. Still quite calm at the moment.
Author of historical sagas, lover of the countryside, often to be found on my North Devon allotment. The first book in my new WW2 trilogy, Julia’s War, is published by Penguin Michael Joseph. Find out more at rosiemeddon.com

Mother Nature put on a spectacular show over North Devon this morning. Perhaps she wants us to heed the Storm Warnings for later today and tomorrow.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Beautiful.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Benthall Hall in Shropshire dates from 1535. Exploring inside made me wonder at all the incredible historical events it must have witnessed in its almost 500 years.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
And then it did this. Fiery pre sunrise sky over North Devon.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Two pictures of dawn over North Devon today, taken 16 minutes apart.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Just before this, that dark cloud brought torrential rain. Now it has cleared, we might see a sunrise.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Unable to see it as the Blood Moon last night because we had too much cloud but it still looks beautiful this morning.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Inadvertently omitted this picture from my post about Wenlock Priory. I have a soft spot for vaulting - captivates me every time. If I remember correctly, this is from the remains of the priory church.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Wenlock Priory, Shropshire, began as an abbey - for men and women - around AD680. The buildings remaining today date from the 12/13th century and have some fabulous details.

Yes!
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
No colourful sunrise this morning but some quite unusual streaky clouds ahead of an approaching weather front.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Peach coloured backlighting to this morning’s clouds. I quite fancy this colour scheme for a bedroom.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social) reply parent
Which turned out to be about ten minutes.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
This morning’s sunrise will be short lived as a bank of rain cloud folds in from the west.

The impressive ruins of the Cistercian Buildwas Abbey, near Telford in Shropshire, date from 1150. The vaulting of the Chapter House and the salvaged medieval floor tiles are stunning.

North Devon sunrise this morning, brightly coloured after a sudden sharp shower.

They’ve been such a fabulous and awe-inspiring sight these last few weeks.

I’m naturally a lark, and all I will say is that the best part of my day is while almost everyone else is still asleep and the day spreads out before me, full of possibilities and as yet unsullied.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Well said.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, I imagine the interior would have been quite dark, apart from the occasions when the sun streamed through the Great East Window. It struck me how much has survived in its roofless state.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
The architecture at Lilleshall Abbey, Shropshire, is stunning. The Augustinian abbey was founded between 1145 and 1148. Shown here are details from the Processional Arch, Slype, and Great East Window.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Needs a click to open: This morning, Venus and Jupiter in the eastern sky were obscured by cloud and so I turned my gaze northwards, where I picked out Ursa Major - the Plough or Big Dipper. It shows up surprisingly well in this shot taken with my phone. Polaris was bright, too.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
I was supposed to be rewriting a problematic chapter but kept getting distracted by the ever changing sky, just before dawn.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Rain. Although regrettably just a passing shower that will evaporate under the next patch of blue sky.

Boscobel House in Shropshire is a fascinating place to visit. The English Heritage volunteers bring alive the story of King Charles II’s flight here after his defeat in the English Civil War - how he hid from his pursuers in priest holes and the ‘Royal Oak’, a descendant of which tree lives today.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes. Regrettably, I’ve never managed more than a flash of turquoise. However, when we lived in Asia, its White-Throated cousins, seen here on our weather station, were regular visitors to the garden.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Just before sunrise, Westward Ho!, this morning. The weather is being kind for the late summer bank holiday weekend.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Well, this is beautifully captured.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
This is simply astonishing.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Pretty sky to start the morning but, at 10C, feeling a mite autumnal.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes!
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
No prizes for the quality of my snatched photo but I was very taken with the alignment of the moon, Venus and Jupiter early this morning.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Discovered this gem of an Arts and Crafts house in Wolverhampton - Wightwick Manor. Not just a fantastic Victorian building but an enviable collection of pre-Raphaelite paintings as well
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Just prior to this, we had a sharp shower of rain. It only delivered 0.6mm but better than nothing.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)

Before dawn this morning when Venus and Jupiter were once again easily picked out in the heavens.

Exploring at Shugborough Hall (National Trust), Staffordshire, recently, where there is so much to see on the estate and some incredible rooms inside. The Vassalli plasterwork ceiling in the State Dining Room is sumptuous.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Kniphofia ‘Bees’ lemon in flower in the herbaceous border at the moment. I always know we’re in August when these appear. Statuesque and vibrant.

Sunrise over North Devon this morning. The hot dry weather is set to continue.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Garden-wise, it is officially late summer when I find hops on the bines.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)

Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Almost high tide, just after sunrise. Looking across the bay towards Baggy Point.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
This morning’s dawn was rather muted, the sunrise disappointingly brief.
Rosie Meddon (@rosiemeddon.bsky.social)
Actual rain is falling - not just the drizzle from the last few occasions. It’s windy here but the rain is quite light and so it will be perfect for the plants but especially the green manure I broadcast at the allotment a few days back.

A vast total of 2mm here in North Devon this morning. And the sunshine immediately afterwards dried it up before it could do any good. Your lake looks desperate.

North Devon coast this morning. Mild and calm but not a very summery sky. A couple of paddle boarders taking advantage of conditions but the surfers were becalmed.
