Side thought to this: does your definition of "community" include an obligation to "give back" to it in some way? Or is it merely a descriptor? Do you think being part of a community necessarily requires an active participation in some way? If so - what ways?
"Community" to me has always been a more general term referring to a group of people who have something in common. ..and not much more than that. Recent discussion has opened my eyes to the fact that it might be more fluid than that to others. Chime in as you like! I'm curious to learn.

Had a quick think on this. I think a better word to use would be "acknowledge" rather than "accept". I acknowledge that there are bad actors in the community, but I don't accept their views as part of the community at large.
I like the "same cafeteria, different table" analogy. It's a big cafeteria, there are many tables. Not everyone is going to get along. But we're still eating the same food.

I understand that, and I'm with you but not everyone believes that. Not wanting to put energy into activism (I do as much as I can and consider myself an activist for the record), does not mean they're not part of the community though. Their existence is valid enough.

For me, it's because it's uncomfortable accepting that there are awful people who do awful things who also happen to be part of the community I'm part of. I know first hand what that's like from my days when I was off pretending to be a white soldier for racism. I'm uncomfortable with my own past..
Unfortunately I think Spacey is absolutely part of the lgbtq community. As much as it disgusts me to include him, but he's gay. He also happens to be a predator, and that's abhorrent and he absolutely deserves to be held accountable for it. But he's still lgbtq at the end of the day...
Agreed, the goalposts kind of moved a little bit from its origins and I'm partly to blame for that. I'm slightly amused at imagining how pissed off, say, Lindsay Graham might be if we welcomed him with open arms as a fellow queer though. 🤣

That's fair. I would say that's activism within the community, and that's great! We need that. But more broadly, not everyone in the community needs or wants to be an activist, which is also fine. (The opposite of activist is not necessarily bigot - some people just want to chill.)

Right, and the key there is you don't have to, but denying that those people exist in the community at all or shunning them as if they *shouldn't* be part of it (they shouldn't be shitty in the community, but they're still part of it..) is a little short-sighted IMHO.
You don't have to tolerate a part of your community to accept the fact that it's still a part of your community. I try to speak up against my fellow cis white dudes when they're shitty, for example, but they're still part of my community.
Not disagreeing with you there but I think we have totally different concepts of what "community" means maybe. I'm gathering you might be taking it to mean "safe haven" of sorts, and that's fine if so - that counts, but it's not what I'm referring to.

Have to treat these people with kid gloves 99% of the time. It sucks, and it's exhausting, but it does eventually get through more often than not. I'm not saying "try harder" here, just acknowledging the difficulties.

This is important. Don't isolate. Talk with people. Keep yourself safe, obviously, but if you can - keep communication open.
I used to think like they do, and I fully agree with this. The more we isolate ourselves, the more likely it is for people to become radicalized. All people have the potential within themselves in equal measure to be empathetic as well as be radicalized toward hate. Isolation makes things worse.
When I say this I don't mean we have to accept their behavior or anything like that, just to be clear. Nor do we have to hold hands and sing, but I don't think sweeping those folks under the rug is going to solve anything.
I understand the feeling and where it comes from, and I don't disagree. But where do we draw the line with what we consider our community overall? It's fine to not want to associate with people personally in that community, but they're still part of it.
Not denying that, but I'm coming at this from a different perspective even than that. Our community isn't all rainbows and roses as much as we'd like to think it is. It's similar to "they're not. 'real' Christians" logic.

There are plenty of queer folks that I'd rather not associate with, but that doesn't make them any less queer. They're unfortunately still part of the community and acting like they're not is a problem imho. (Sort of a tangent, sorry..)
