Hello everyone! I am working on a story for The Guardian about how Chicagoans are preparing for the possible arrival of federal troops, following President Trump's statements on the matter. Right now, I'm looking for residents, community organizers, business owners, and other folks to talk to!
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
you can always point to your table if there seems to be confusion but I almost never have an issue
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
generally they know what you ordered or have a tab sitting there already and just ring you up there without you saying anything. I know that sounds crazy but it really works very smoothly
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
to be clear, google maps is better than nothing, it's just extremely limited compared to north america / europe
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm a fan of copy-pasting the korean address of a place i'm trying to go to into naver maps, which will be able to display transit and walking directions and so on. if navigating by google maps you can still zoom into the map and look at the streets, it just won't display walking directions
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
two things I just remembered other Americans having trouble with * it is in fact actually true that tipping is not expected and is in some cases actively insulting * almost all restaurants, even the fancy tasting menu ones, are pay-at-the-counter after your meal. do not sit and wait for the bill
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
(I assume Google Maps still sucks though)
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
OMG! Thank you for the correction!
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
(You could always do a weird multi-app circumvention where you Google translate what you want into Korean and then paste it into naver but this is probably more effort than it's worth it on a long weekend. You just kind of have to accept Google is gonna be wack)
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh, and two technology tips-- 1) Airtags don't work in Korea so don't freak out 2) Google Maps fucking sucks in Korea, especially for figuring out restaurant stuff. Naver Maps will tell you what's decent in your vicinity but even though it translates to English it won't let you do English search
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
skip the myeongdong night market and probably skip gwangjang market. namdaemun market is okay. Ikseon-dong Hanok Village is super cute with a billion lovely cafes. If you get a chance to try (artisanal) Korean liquor (makgeolli, cheongju, yakju, or soju) you should go for it.
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
if you or your wife has any remote interest in skincare, set aside a significant amount of space in your checked luggage and go into a shopping trance for about an hour at the myeongdong olive young. kind of a frenetic experience but one of my favorite things to do in korea
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
* anything that koreans call a "walk" is actually a hike. anything that koreans call a hike is actually a death defying vertical climb. it doesn't matter if the person who's describing it is like 70 years old. my people are freaks
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
oh, and this part depends on the weather, but the fall foliage should be looking really beautiful around the time you're visiting. I'd consider a "walk"* up namsan mountain if you're outdoorsy, but otherwise, yeouido hangang park (along the han river) is extremely scenic and lovely in fall
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
finally, if you ever see these stickers on the front of a restaurant (especially with the current year listed) it's gonna be fucking dope as all hell and you should definitely eat it.
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
saw a comment that you're looking to see historical sites. skip gyeongbok palace in favor of changdeok palace and look for an opportunity to do the secret garden tour. i generally think the pork bbq places are more consistently excellent rather than the beef bbq places. look for "jeju black pork"
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
TIRED: attacking the press WIRED: bribing the press, but inauspiciously
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
WHO DOES THAT??????????????
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
oh my god it WAS a reused envelope "Anticipating possible law enforcement investigations, THE CITY did not open the envelope or count the money inside."
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
exactly!!!
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm so fixated on the mixed bills
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
"at least one $100 bill and several $20 bills" so I guess it could be like 200 or so. funny they didn't just take the money out and count it but maybe there was a legal issue. sorry I don't have any professional insight into that, since I have never dealt with the issue of BEING BRIBED WITH CASH
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
which like, I know this really isn't important, but who the hell puts mixed bills in a red envelope
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
and a bribe in a normal envelope and no additional packaging (food-related or otherwise) is also insane; but then you add the detail that it's $140 in cash. which is weirdly fucking small but then also it's IN MIXED BILLS?
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
I do enjoy that this story has like ten different constituent parts that are fucking insane on their own. like it would already be weird as shit to offer a reporter an open bag of chips as a "light snack"
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean that's even funnier in the sense that winnie greco is apparently not in the habit of regularly putting money into red envelopes
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
she just wanted to feed a reporter. as a friend. is that so wrong?
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the envelope wasn't used, it's just open in photos because the reporter opened it so that's one aspect of the story that's "normal"
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
listen, idk who's giving red envelopes to non-asian strangers but what do I know. asian america is not a monolith I guess

"Once dissent was squashed, TikTok no longer posed a threat." Good piece. I would add that TikTok now faces a ban at the flick of the President's pen... How could that not be affecting content moderation now? www.theverge.com/features/761...
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
The TikTok ban — passed with overwhelming bipartisan support — was motivated by fear that kids these days had the wrong opinions about Israel. With the physical crackdown on dissent, enforcing the sell-or-ban law app is no longer a priority. www.theverge.com/features/761...

and I'd agree that standard Korean blood sausage is more approachable for a squeamish baby / American palate. There's a bloodier variant that more closely resembles black pudding but it's less widely available despite being, in my opinion, more delicious.
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
Koreans also have a bloodier variant (name roughly translates to "blood blood sausage" I guess) which is closer to the consistency of black pudding, and it's much less common
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
yeah, black pudding is awesome.

sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
Basic Korean blood sausage is way more approachable than black pudding but yeah I think blood sausage is not common in the US, but found almost everywhere else? Americans get squeamish when I mention the British kind, which is delicious imo

I'm only going to say this once: It is a very bad idea to ask 18-year-olds with assault rifles that have been put through ten weeks of a brainwashing regimen meant to control for the negative effects of giving 18-year-olds assault rifles to determine which civilian orders are right or wrong.
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent

sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
so did she add him as a "haha wouldn't it be funny if this actually worked" and didn't anticipate that the system would let it happen?
sarah jeong (@sarahjeong.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it is an extremely bad idea to encourage members of the military to disobey civilian orders.
