Quite the bold claim after Republicans decided to kick 15 million people off of Medicaid and ended insurance subsidies that will result in millions more going uninsured. More xenophobic racist bullshit dressed up as pro-American jingoism, as is the GOP way.

Every story quoting Trump saying this is to "rescue our nation’s capital from crime" needs to note that violent crime in D.C. is down 26%, murders are down 12%, juvenile arrests are down 20%, and ask who will get hurt from a domestic military deployment and what this "crackdown" is really about

Weirdly, Trump is arguing against more police for MPD. "I heard 3,500 police. That’s a lot of police. I thought they were going to say we only have 30 policemen. We need more. You don’t need more. That’s an army," he says. Trump instead says D.C. needs "rough police."

The irony is not lost on many in Washington that Trump says spitting on a DC cop is justification for hitting/punching back "hard" when he pardoned hundreds of Jan. 6 rioters who assaulted those same cops — and said attacks on them that day were "minor."

Congress has given the President the power to take control of the D.C. local police for up to 30 days "for federal purposes," and to deploy the (tiny) D.C. National Guard. As today's "One First" explains, that's the full extent of what the President can do to "federalize" D.C. without new statutes:
Kevin M. Levin (@civilwarmemory.bsky.social) reposted
The same president that wants to call up the National Guard to handle crime in DC, which is at its lowest rate in years, instigated one of the most violent uprisings in the city, all for the purpose of maintaining power. Donald Trump is the gravest threat to peace in Washington, DC.
Mark Joseph Stern (@mjsdc.bsky.social) reposted
One perverse aspect of Trump calling up the D.C. National Guard while crime plummets to a 30-year-low: Trump REFUSED to call up the D.C. Guard on Jan. 6 to counter an insurrection that he himself incited. If Congress won't give D.C. statehood, at least give us control over our National Guard.

There's a long & sordid history of politicians beating up on DC as a part of a wider assault on democracy and equal rights. In 1890, US Senator (and former Confederate General) John T. Morgan said Congress had to burn down the barn—to end elected local government in DC—to "get rid of the rats." 🗃️
