I think the biggest lesson of the last few decades is that the left/liberal center/generally moral and decent people are losing their voice in media (new and old) and that politics is following that. I can’t see the world getting better until that is fixed, but there seems to be no effort to do so

The last thing I'll say is if you're outside of the US— Look at what's happening as a lesson to take your country/local politics and elections seriously. The political trends in other countries around the globe are growing more right-wing and are not so far behind what's happening here in the US.
Easy to think here that we're all overwhelmed by the news & aware of much of it. As a professor, though, I get to talk to large groups of educated, lib/left young people, *majority* of whom have only the barest awareness of what's happening. So talk to your IRL friends. You'll be surprised.

Also, one of Trump’s great advantages is that he has very few things he actually believes in, which gives him a lot of latitude. But he has a genuine personal ideological zeal for tariffs. You can find him praising them in interviews 30 years ago.
