What are they going to do, admit that "Smartless" isn't worth it and they made a mistake? That there might be a limit to Joe Rogan's value as the centerpiece of an audio lineup? Never. They'll destroy the medium and themselves before they do that.
Video is important to building new shows now - they're absolutely right about that - but they're putting the cart before the horse. The show has to be worth listening to, and they've thrown hundreds of millions of dollars at people who aren't all that compelling while margins shrink.
The big podcast companies are chasing growth at all costs to justify their investments. Right now, that growth is coming from video clips on social media featuring name-value celebrities, so that's where they're going to focus. It's not going to get their money back, but they're committed.
