The Google doodle is pushing photosynthesis, and feels sciencey and all, but many students who can recite the details of PS are so disconnected from science that they still believe most of the stuff of trees comes from the ground. Trees are mostly made from the stuff found in your breath.

Alas, it backfires a bit, at least temporarily--kids truly start to question the Earth's shape. That's OK, *more* than OK. We can cultivate skepticism without creating more conspiracy theories. Foucault's pendulum is a wonderfully just-complex-enough demo to tilt the argument hard the other way.

That earned me a block. But really, unless you dig into the evidence, the Flat Earthers at least have some obvious evidence supporting their position. Naive maybe, but real. So every year I ask my students--how do you know that the Earth is round and that it spins, beyond some (cult)ural beliefs?

Anyone have a spare surfboard? Erin is tearing up the beaches, and a surfboard allows me to wallow in the ocean even if I have no clue how to use it. Cape May beaches today are full of folks just lolling on boards with no intention of pretending to catch a wave.

I live & teach in Bloomfield, NJ. Our electricity rates have gone up 28% the past year, a good part due to the incredible energy usage of AI centers. A lot of our kids will have more stress because their families struggle to meet utility bills. And yet we push AI, which (btw) currently sucks.
