Ahhh I love your lil eels 🥺 they are so cute! And I agree, there's something special about vintage porcelain 💕 it's often abandoned and unloved now, so these pieces get a second life 😄
There are other more conscious choices around the theme but this deep sense of fragility of life, the reclaiming of nature is something that always stuck with me. They're lost to us but little homes to the planets critters.
I have no idea which book it was, I'm pretty sure I couldn't even read properly yet but that image absolutely gripped my mind and left a deep impression on young me. I wasn't able to find the exact photo again but here's something similar:
There are a bunch of reasons for this combination, some of them conscious choices. When I was a kid I got into this book about the sinking of the Titanic, that I absolutely had no reason to get into at that young age. I will never forget the photo of a porcelain tea cup sunken into the seabed.

I've got my eyes set on (reef) sharks next. They could use more of our love & positive light on their hugely important roles in the world. Art is of great use in casting gentle light like this 🙂↕️
These days I feel that their image has changed a lot for the better. In no small part because of the efforts of documentaries (My Octopus Teacher was hugely influential), books, sci-comm and artists. I'm now expanding into other reef related topics but this is a slow (mindful) journey.
Read any kind of scientific research on cephalopods and that image was super unfair. Especially for species such as the Larger Pacific Striped Octopus but many others have been wronged by human ignorance. So I wanted to show them in a different light ☺️ they're absolutely amazing animals.
It's probably called marine biology! 🤔 Not sure if there's a specific name for cephalopod specialists. I love all kinds of animals! ☺️ When I started making octopus in 2017 their reputation and public image was very different. Almost seen as a villain, I would often get Cthulhu comments.

This was intentional & tested the stability in the armature phase. Basically just a lot of trying to tip it over from every angle and then adjust 😆 The pose is inspired by how Day Octopus swim. They don't do it a lot because they like to stick to the ground obviously but it can be very graceful.
Surprisingly sturdy! They have a good degree of flexibility and are built over a strong wire armature. From testing I know it takes intent and a lot of force to break them 😸

They're not a well known species, unfortunately. They break the "rules" or what we think we know about octopuses which is good for Scientific review. Makes us look closer. Some other species such as Gloomy Octopus and Day Octopus now are also found to be much more social than previously thought.

I know you're joking but have you seen wet specimen octopus? They're so weird looking! Like a deflated balloon. No bones does weird things to lifeless forms. I never know whether to be grossed out or fascinated by them. Bit of both, I guess 🤣
